valve covers will bolt up as long as they are romeo to romeo...I think you can run a mild PI cam such as a 262ah but the problem is with the springs. They just don't have the same ability to handle the lift of the PI cam so upgrade to the comp springs and that may do it.

96+ OEM springs are the same, regardless which head it is in. I don't remember why NPI's have less lift than PI's but it is not the springs, as they are the exact same part.
As for running the Comp 262AH cam in NPI heads, you could use the stock springs but you would be pushing them to their limit in the NPI head. I would either use Comp or Crower springs, or Crower retainer's to add a little lift to the NPI head.
Yes, you can. The thing is that .550 lift is the maximum lift in NPI heads with stock springs. That is the lift of the off the shelf Comp Cams, so doing so you are maxing out the springs. How long you can do it before something breaks is the more relevant question. I wouldn't run the stock springs because at higher RPMs with maxed out springs, you are more likely to get valve float and damage something.
