Running Hot

today i got the motor working and everything was great, but it is running hot. I put in a new thermostat 180* and new gaskets and everything worked before so i dont know what is going on here. Anyone have any ideas? The waterpump is new and the radiator is also.

WEll i have no clue what is going on, we changed out the thermostat to the old one and it sill runs hot. It ran hot on the way home so hot that i had to pull over and wait for it to cool down. I am totally stumped for ideas. The radiator holds 3 gallons of antifreeze and water. It is out of an 84 Lincoln, The water pump is new and there is no leeks it keeps spilling over in the overflow jug I am totally stumped Can someone help me???? Hissin How do you "Burp" the system?

a system with air pockets can overheat. to burp it:
on a cold motor, remove the rad cap. jack up the front end so that the rad cap hole is the highest point in the system (jacking or creative parking eases the air's path out). run the motor like this til up to operating temps. be sure the heater is on while doing so.

you should see some bubbles coming out periodically, as well as seeing the t-stat open at the specified temp (water will flow from the pass side to drivers side if you peer down into the rad cap hole). be careful; dont get burned or anything.

once no more air is comin out, put the cap on and take it for a spin.

if that does not cure it, please be more specific - when does it overheat? are you using a real gauge? other symptoms? etc. good luck.

OK i havent been able to get on in a few days somthing about the server. Well here is what it is doing. Wednesday i drove it to school about 30 minutes away. (Mostly Highway) The gauge didnt start climbing until i was about 1/4 mile away from school. So i get out and it spewed coolant in the overflow tank. I though that maybe i overfilled it. Well after that i had school from 8:30-2:00 I go out there and the overflow tanks was full. So i opened the radiator and it was low. So i get the coolant out and fill the radiator. Then on the way home it got hot as hell. As i was driving down the interstate i smelled coolant So i pulled over and it had filled the overflow tank and then some. I waited about 15-20 minutes and drove it home after it cooled down. Then i havent drove it since. The water pump is new and we changed out t-stat again and still nothing. So i am gettting the radiator boiled out and cleaned and i removed the Ac radiator since i dont have it anyways. The i will try and burp the system. I am totally stumped the water pump is new also, but now a days that doesnt mean anything.
