Running without a fan shroud?

I think I need a fan shroud,

Even with my gigantor griffin aluminum rad, the temp will creep up to the H when I get stuck in rush hour traffic. As soon as I get driving a bit, it will come straight back down to right in the middle of the guage.

And at night, when the temperature outside is cool, the needle won't go more than 1/4 up the guage from the C.

so one of these electric fans that mount on the radiator shouldnt require a shroud then right?

It creats a ventury effect and accelerates the air going through the radiator. Although heat radiates off the engine, outside air is used mainly to cool the radiator and the small job it does on the engine in minimal. Heck, 100 mph will do more for cooling the block.

Lets not leave out the size and placement of the fan to make the shroud worth having on.

I was in a 77 Dodge 1 ton pickup once, and it was having overheating problems. I pulled over because the thing was starting to sound like a tea kettle. The owner of the truck, who I was following, told me to get it up to around 90 and hold it their. Well, I reluctantly did just that, but after a while, I was starting the think about ducking behind the dash when and if the thing blew. A few miles later, I just couldn't take it anymore and pulled back over. So, the method it flawed.


I wasn't speeding in Cali. Officially, I was ticketed for impeeding traffic. I was in the 3rd lane slowly creeping up on the car in the 2nd lane, and right when I got along side of him, I noticed a damn chippy attempting to go between the 2 of us. That freaked me out and I lost my concentration and got a little loose. Well, he pulled me over, and after rearrainging his pantaloons to hide the brown stain, he lied saying I was going 65 in a 70 when I was actually going 73 in a 70. But hey, the donation is fine. It didn't increase my insurance rates and California needs all the help they can get. I wish I could have made a recomendation to Arnold to spend my donation on border guards.

The electric fans have the shroud as part of the assembly.

Actually, it really doesn't do that so much as pull air through the radiator instead of just swirling the air around behind it.

Try it without. If it overheats, buy a repop; they are cheap. I have a built 302 in my convert. so I need one. But between the shroud, a seven bladed fan, a fan clutch and the WaterWetter, it is good to go in any temperature.
