Well, I checked all the plugs last night and they all had exactly the same shade of tan. If I had to be picky I could say that the #4 plug was a few shades darker than the rest, but none of them looked unusual or stressed. I think at this stage I will wait until the pertronix goes in this weekend and then see if I still have any issues and go from there. My main concern was getting it home safe and that was acheived.

Thanks everyone.

That sounds good, did ja check the filter? Do you have a mechanical pump or an electric pump?

Ignition gets my vote.
I would go through it and install what you have and maybe add a new coil.
Sounds like plugs and wires are okay. I am thinking Pertronix, cap, rotor, coil for starters. Go through and clean connections that aren't replaced.
Now that you have done that, change the fuel filter for good measure.
What carb you running?
I ask because Holley (others may too) has the sintered bronze 'filters' in each fuel inlet. My experience with these is that they do nothing but eventually clog fuel flow. I take them out of a new Holley and run a good external filter. If they are not out of your carb, take them out.

So I should order the Flamethrower coil then too? When I bought the pertronix way back when my coil was fairly new so I didn't buy both. Cap and Rotor looked pretty good, but I guess they are cheap enough, I should be able to pick them up locally. It did not occur to me until you mentioned the contacts, but now that I think about it, my ground connection to the block is not as clean as it should be due to frequent coolant repairs. In fact, right before this happened I was actually running fine, shut the car off and when I went to restart it I had no power. I was in a hurry so I just got under there wiggled it a little and then off I went until this crap started. I figured if there was enough draw to start the starter motor then the two weren't related. Could they be though? I have a new SS braided hose kit to install, so I figured I would just wait until I was done with that and then clean the connection only once.

Carb is a Holly 4 barrel, 6100???? I think, does that sound right? Do you have a picture or diagram of what these sintered bronze 'filters' look like? I hate to take apart and tear out when I don't know exactly what I am messing with, and Carb's are where I have the least experience of all.

Yeah I checked the filter that afternoon, looked perfectly clean to me. That's what lead me to move on to the points. Still not sure what type of pump I have for sure, I'll investigate tonite though.

You almost surely have a mechanical fuel pump in the stock location on the driver's side of the timing cover. If you had an electric pump, you would have a block off plate in the timing cover, and would most likely have a "whine" coming from underneath the car when it is running.

It's a 4100. The bronze filter looks like a cone shaped sponge that goes in the big housing at the front of the carb where your fuel line ties onto. I say sponge, what it looks like is a bunch of tiny brass balls that were compressed together, yet leave some little gaps in between. Sorta like styrofoam packing in the box your TV, Microwave, computer, etc. comes with.

Yeah 4100, that sounds right, I knew that. OK, cool, that sounds super easy to get to and locate, thanks Larry. So as long as I get a top grade line filter that thing is essentially wasted space then. I would think that little rascal would get gunked up to being so fine.
