I have decided that I want to buy a fuel cell for my 66 coupe. The reason is because my current tank is all rusted out and I would like to make my car more safe. I was thining about getting a plastic summit drag race fuel cell for $120.00 I was wondering if you guys thought it was a good idea.

I also wanted to buy a shift kit for my tranny, but I haven't seen any for a 66 c-4. Their is one for a 67+. Would this be alright for my tranny?

i have a shift kit in my C4, which i believe is original to the car... they definitely exist, i'll see if i can fish one out for you

Anyone have any comments on the fuel cell? How easy would it be to install?

I don't know how much safer a plastic cell would be. I'm no expert, but it seems to me one with a bladder would be the only improvement. I am thinking of a summit one as well. If I do it, it will be one with a fuel gauge sender though.

Now I'm thinking I will probably get this one if I get one. I would get the 15 gal. w/o sender because they only have GM seders.

I don't think these fuel cells are DOT approved. If you are just racing the car on weekends I guess this would be a good deal. The fuel cells that I was looking at (fuel safe racing cells) cost any where from $900 to $1200 and will directly bolt into a classic Mustang. They have a internal bladder but also have an aluminum shell and have 3/5/10 year warrentys. By the way.....I have some experience with aircraft fuel cells and they start coming apart around the 10 to 15 year mark.

DO NOT buy the plastic fuel cells. They begin to cave in after a while, a friend of mine with a third gen Camaro has one.

I have the red powdercoated aluminum fuel cell from Summit. It looks sweet and has held up well. It was pretty cheap, too. It's 15 gallons but with the foam in it will only take 10 or 11, you might want to think about that.

I had to do some custom fabbing to get it to fit, but it was only around 180 bucks from what I remember. When you take out the fuel tank, you will no longer have a trunk floor. I measured the hole and cut a steel plate and bolted it to the car with grade 8 bolts. I had to cut a small hole in the steel plate b/c there's a "bump" on the bottom where the fuel comes out. But it was worth it. Umm, I don't have a trunk now though. Oh well.

My father has a plastic fuel cell in his prostreet bel-air and it seems to be holding up. He's had it for about 6 years.

The easiest no-brainer is to take thehueypilot's advice and get the sportsman or pro racing cells from Fuel Safe. You can get drop in units from Mustangs Plus for <$1,000. Another options is to get the standard off-the-shelf 15 or 20 gal. units and use a pan and tray to mount it in the trunk. The tray and shelf are available from Delta Bay Mustang. Taking this route will save several hundred dollars but installation isn't as clean.
