Safe shot for 5.0

What is the biggest shot i can run on my 90gt without compromising the motor to much. it has 103,xxx miles on it. I had nitrous on it before and still has the braded line run and tapped into the fuel line. But im not sure what shot it had on it before.

hey boostin, i think i read in 5.0 mag that u shouldnt run more than a 75 shot. but other people will tell u that your block will hold up too more. but it's better to be safe than sorry.

It will take a 75-100shot all day long and a 125 in fair moderation.
N2o is not bad like it is made out to be.

I agree the Search button does wonders let me tell you but when I had my 87 I was running a 75 and it was perfect i wouldnt have gone higher on a stock engine

You got forged pistons, I'm sure it could take a 150 shot, even though I would usually run just a 100-125 shot. I know youll need plugs a couple heat ranges colder and probably back the timing down some, but I think you can go bigger. Just be sure you got everything you need before you hit it.

The most I would ever spray is a 100 shot any more then that and your pushing it.

colder heat rang plugs gapped at 35 thousandths, timing set at 10* and your absolutly fine shotin a 125.

I had this same question, but my case is with HCI and a lopey cam.


Would my 140k mile bottom end be safe from a 75 shot with the heads and NA cam? Given it is tuned right. Should anything drastic happen?

Completly stock setup, no more than 100-125, then you better hope everythign is in good order.

However, colder range plugs (autolite 24's), 255lph Fuel Pump, 8-10* timing, I wouldn't be afraid to hit a 200. Yeah, really, a well known NMRA racer got his start with a 91LX hatch, just added a pump, tires, and a 200shot on a 200K mile motor and ran it a lot for a few years. Of course now he's got a Turbo 4.6 DOHC.

My friend was tryin to see how long his stock motor(t-body to oil pan) would last on a dry 150 and still doesnt have an answer. Its been two full seasons at the end of this one.

i would keep it at 100.....yes it can handle more , but why not be safe.

plus , you need to shim the nitrous reg every time you squirt over 100, then remove it when 100 and under....too ez to forget.

especially when making NA runs as well.

Why only a 100 shot? What's going to blow if you run a bigger shot? A stock motor will only be pushing out over 300 hp at that rate, nowhere near the tolerance limits of the motor

Thanks guys for the imput, i am pushing 250hp and 300tq right now. What do some of the people with close to stock motors and a 75 shot run

12.88@102 with stock motor bolt-ons gears and built tranny with 225rwhp n/a. no times with the 90 shot of gas yet.

The only thing holding it back is if you go with a dry kit, and you don't upgrade your fuel system. I wouldn't spray big unless I upgraded or went with a wet kit.

My block only had 75,000 miles on it and I snapped the crank in half using a 125 shot of nitrous. I did have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, ran colder plugs, retarded my timing and added octane boost. So honestly, your chancing it. I only bent some rods and snapped the crank, it gave me an excuse to throw a stroker in it. I would keep it at a 75 shot unless you have enough money to rebuild it. Sure the block itself can handle, but what about your bottom end, gaskets, and all the other crap. What about your tranny? Theres many factors to consider especially on a stock block with 105,000 miles. Where they easy or hard miles? Not all 5.0's are the same....
