safe to patch leaking break line

The exhaust on my dads sport trac burned a pinhole leak in one of the rear break lines causing it to lose pressure and leak. Is there a safe way temporarily patch this hole for 500 miles? THANKS

Legally or not, you can safely and permanently fix the problem by cutting out the bad spot of brake line, getting two nuts and a union, flaring the lines and joining them together.

And give that exhaust a spanking

we're on vacation in the obx 500 miles from home. we were doing some off roading on the beach and one of the exhaust clamps from his duals broke and burned the hole. We need a temp. fix so we can get home and have our mechanic replace the lines with.

the h0le is in a rubber line....it will be very hard t0 fix that. y0u might be able t0 get a barbed end that y0u can cut the brake line and slip it in and put h0se clamps 0n it, but i w0uldnt really feel safe. if its a single brake line i w0uld just g0 t0 an advance and fix it in the parking l0t

Ew, no there really isn't a good way to patch that.

A smiliar thing happened on my old subaru once, I ended up folding the rubber line in half, and putting a line clamp on it to keep it from leaking, and basically went without rear brakes to that wheel from Norfolk up to NoVA. I'm not making any claims that this is by any means safe nor am I even advocating doing something similar. But you do what you gotta do and sometimes that means thinking outside of the box.

Thats what i figured. What if I cut out the rubber with the hole and then use a slightly larger rubber hose and slip the smaller break line hose inside it and then clamped the two ends? I'm in the obx and there arnt any parts stores with the line in stock and the nearest ford dealership 50 minutes away.

If that plan doesnt work is it possible/safe to cut off pressure to that break? Its a rear drum and i'm not sure how i would do this.

Try NAPA and see if they sell the rubber soft lines. I know they sell them for the Mustang as i bought two. Replace the line, bleed the brakes and go home.


I know someone who had leaking rear calipers and pinched off his rear lines with vice grips for a day or so. I wouldn't do it though.
