Sandblasting Concerns

Can anyone who's done this themselves give a good recommendation for a filter/respirator? I've searched on the internet, but have been unable to find anything really helpful. I've got some small parts to clean up with a sandblaster (no cabinet though), and will be doing it outside in a well ventilated area. Everything I've seen so far that looks like it would work ends up having a list of "Not to be used for:" which seems to always have "sandblasting" included.

I'd rather not injure myself just to get some rust off a part...

I've done my share of outdoor blasting and found that any good respirator will work IF you wear a sanblasting hood. You can buy cheap ones at Northern Tool. I also use a disposable overall getup to help keep sand out of my clothes I used the disposable suit about 10 times before the zipper finally gave out.
One other thing: beware of where the sand is going to go. Neighbors won't be happy if they have sand dust all over their cars or in the outdoor grill.

I've always used the disposable paper sanding masks they seem to work fine under a blasting hood.

Thanks. Looks like I'm buying one of the blasting hoods then. I saw that Northern Tool had one for about $20 that looks like it would work...

If interested you can make your own hood for small jobs. Get the full face shield that is used when grinding (you can get one at Lowes or HD). Use the old duct tape to hold a towel in place that will cover your head. The paper respirators also work good. I did all of my blasting using this set up with no problems.

If you did it day in and day out you would need to step up and spend some bucks.

One final thought. Before you get started blasting go ahead and put a hand full of sand into your underware. You might as well get that part out of the way first.
