Saving gas tips?

Do you only have a 5 gallon gas tank on your car or what?????? every 50 miles? That's horrible! I drive with a heavy foot city/highway and I still manage to get a little over 16 mpg which means I can EASILY go over 100 miles on half a tank. There's either something wrong with your car or you're doing a damn good job of feeding it the throttle.

Well last week I put in $10 which gave me about 5 gallons of gas and that was about right under the half tank mark and I reset my miles and I Just put in gas yesterday because it was down right above the red mark and i only went about 50 miles.

Shift at around 1,700 RPM's whenever you can. I try to drive like a grandma as much as possible, the only time I drive it hard is on weekends if im with friends and stuff. It's hard to resist but the way I see it, if I'm going to school early in the morning.. there's a bunch of old people around me, why rev it all hard? Not like anyone of those people care.

Hey, does your car smell like fuel all the time?

Just wondering if you have a leak somewhere and thats why you are getting mileage like that? Also are you filling your tank all the way up or are you just giving it $10 at a time? Cause I know with both of mine, the needle is not accurate at all.

I heard that if the charcoal canister in your gas tank goes bad your MPG drops like a rock.

Other than the tips already listed, I only know of a couple more. One, keep your tires inflated farily close to maximum pressure. This will create less friction with the road as more of the tire isn't hitting the pavement. Two, ALWAYS fill your gas at night. At night, the air is colder and gas is mesarued by volume and NOT density. So when you wake up the next day, the gas expands a little and, voila, you've gained about 2 extra drops of gas!

However, I don't know HOW someone could use less gas traveling at 85 than at 55 unless they had a lower RPM at 85 (6th gear maybe? or 5 long ones?) I've read that you use 4(i think) times as much gas traveling at 65 than at 55mph.

Check your gas gauge. I think it is not functioning correctly. They have been known to fail/read incorrectly. Try driving till its empty and see what your full tank range is. Of course carry a some gasoline with you when you think you are getting close to empty.

Actually my 88 5.0 got better gas milage(3MPG!!) at 80-85 than I did at 70-75. The motor was more effeciant at a little hight RPM for some reason. It came out the same every time. Maybe its the same with the modular motors.

I've never ran out of gas while driving, I always put in 5 gallons worth of gas when I see it right above the red line. But, to anybody who drives their car until the last drop of gas know if a light or indication flashes when the car is running low on gas, just like how the low oil light flashes as well? This could really help me seeing as once I see the light then I could go to the gas station my next stop instead of always filling it up when I think it's low. Thanks.

I don't think any of us bought our cars for good gas mileage. Anyways, the manual says you should shift at like 10, 20, 30, and 40mph for the best mpg. So you'd already be in 5th at 40mph. I get around 17 miles per gallon.

Like the other guy said, the engine is more efficient at the higher RPM. You have to consider that's cruise control as well.

The sooner you get into higher gear the better the mpg is going to be. Under normal driving i shift at about 1800 and i go into 5th at like 40 . And i have to ask btu why do you only put five gallons in when you gas up? Fill her up man

I think some of you are missing the concept. While higher engine speed means you are using more gas, it does not necessarily mean less gas mileage. You will definitely use more gas as rpm raises, but you are forgetting that you are traveling a greater distance. Therfore, as long as the difference in distance travelled exceeds the difference in fuel used, you are getting better gas mileage.

Distance to fuel ratio.

80 MPH w/ 1LPM fuel usage
70 MPH w/ .8LPM fuel usage
60 MPH w/ .6LPM fuel usage

Use more fuel going 80, but you go 10 miles further in on hour. Plus, that isn't accounting for coasting and accelerating. It's holding everything constant.

Do you mean that you get the rpm's up to 6000 thousand every time you take off?!? I guess that would explain the 50 miles per half a tank. So with a full tank you would be at slightly under 100 miles. Divided by a 15+/- gallon tank... that's 6.7 miles per gallon. Start shifting at 2,500 rpm... and you shouldn't be driving your car at 3,500 rpm for extended periods of time... like you mentioned. Hope that helps...

with 4.10 install.. it's hard to guess..

simple math fixes the problem:

4.10/3.27 = 1.254 mult. factor

All the mph shift points / 1.254 will give you what your looking for. I've heard the philosophy that getting to your cruising rpm as fast as possible is the most optimal gas mileage...but i've not been able to prove it one way or the other. Its possible because most of the time when people gun it, they are stop and go stop and go which wastes gas...
