I just got back from deployment, i put an accel ignition on, as well as a new cap and rotor, 9mm wires, spark plugs, speedo gear and all day yesterday i spent putting on a stock h pipe because i had to go through emmitions today. I am in NJ. My car never leaked before and 2 days ago i noticed some oil under my car. I went to dmv today and passed with flying colors. i was so happy. i left and stoped by a friends house to notice smoke comming from the engine bay through the cowl. I look in the bay to see my cat is burning what smells like oil. further investigation i find oil comming out the bellhousing and all over the trans. So the question is, is the oil comming from the rear main seal. i think all the oil on the trans is getting their from the wind under the car when i drive. Does this sound like my problem. this sucks because i have to drive back to virginia next week and return to work. Will this leak only get worse, i dident notice any oil comming from the back of the intake and my valve cover isnt leaking. Why did this all of a suden happen. how much will it cost to get fixed... thanks all, tom

Sounds like the Rear Main Seal, just check the back of the intake to see if anything back there is leaking first. If your doing the RMS make sure you get the Ford one from the dealer, they're like 13 bucks. It would also be a good time to replace your clutch. You should get multiple bids from different tranny shops. Just ask and make sure they are willing to do the RMS. I got my clutch and RMS replaced for $280 that included flywheel resurfacing (just labor)

I normally park my car for the winter. Both last year and this year it developed a rear main leak that actually went away after I started driving it regularly. You might try cleaning off the excess, drive it a bit and see if it improves.

ok, i really dont have the time to do the job myself. how much time would this job take for a experanced mechanic to do. i dont want to get riped off. The h-pipe wont give him any problems either since i just put it in yesterday, so the nuts should come right off. thanks

ps- anyone close to woodbridge NJ want to make some money and do it for me... in a day of course...

Well they have to drop the H-Pipe & Transmission to get to it, rear main is very common to leak in the 5.0's, only costs $5 & only takes 5 minutes to change, I did mine a few months ago aswell & it took about 3 or 4 hours to do so if a shop charges $65 an hour you should be looking @ around $200-$250 to have it done.

i had the same problem with my 86 a couple of months ago.it was leaking from the back of my intake.it took me about 4 hours to do,but i'm not an experienced mechanic.reach your hand behind the intake and check for oil

when my valve cover gasket leaked it did exactly what you described

im in the navy, what about you? As for my problem, i ordered a one piece teflon rms, and while the trans was off i ordered a king corba clutch. they are being installed today and will be finished tomorrow. I cant wait to get her back with the new clutch.

Mines leaking from the same area only it isn't quite as bad.But still,it's gonna be a ß!+ch because it's a damn AOD.That's just a dozen more things that have to be done not to forget having to dump the fluid.

What did you guys use to lower and support your tranny? Do you have to use a special tranny jack or is there another way so I don't have to fork out big bucks for .....you guessed it.... Another "Special" tool.Oh...that car is sooo damn special.Needs special tools to replace everything on it.

Got access to the Families Tranny Shop
Pulling a tranny and replacing a clutch + RMS is so quick an easy its almost like a quick lube.

Guess I'm just lucky

Ive seen a lot of rear intake seals leaking that were mistaken for RMS'. If you have the money, you might as well get them both done, because eventually they both will leak.

my machanic said the seal was all messed up. said whoever installed it banged it all up, luckley their were no abrasions on the crank, so hopefully this seal will last awhile. I also needed a new pilot bearing. I will be getting her back tomorrow. tom
