Scraping Sound That Goes With Rpms.

Today, I noticed there's a scraping noise (like a rock stuck in brake cover) coming from under the car. I'm pretty sure it's something in the bell housing, but I don't wanna take the tranny off if I don't have to. Clutch in or clutch off it makes the noise, but you can't hear it at idle. Whenever coming to a stop slowly, I can hear a circular scraping noise getting slower and slower till I come to a stop.

If you think it's in the bell housing, find a nice big empty parking lot. Get car to a roll and shift trans to neutral. Shut off engine and let clutch out. Everything in bell housing will be stopped, so if the noise is still there, it's something else.

Does it do it when the car is stopped completely if you rev the engine?

The ebrake cables can rub on the driveshaft.
I've checked that, and that seems to be fine. And when I revved the engine, I don't hear the noise.

I'll try this out tomorrow.

Also, I should mention that whenever i shift the car kinda jerks. I got all new motor and tranny mounts and I've checked the tranny fluid, which was fine.

Uh, is this an AOD? No sense chacking hte clutch then
 
Well, if it doesn't do it in any way shape or form when the car is stopped, likely the problem is the trans back. Highly doubtful the issue is in the bellhousing, because with the clutch pedal realeased, everything in the bell is spinning even the input shaft if the car is in neutral.
Put it the rear on jack stands so the suspension is loaded and have someone put the car in gear. Obviously be careful.

Not to be redundant, but make sure to reach up over the driveshaft and feel for the e brake cables. Drove me nuts until I put the car on the stands and found the issue.

If so, think about parts that only move when the car does, separately than the motor. In the back, that starts at the tires, wheels, breaks, differential, U joints, input shaft bearing and varying parts of the transmission.

Up front, that's tires, wheels breaks and bearings.

If you still think it is in the clutch, there is some inspection you can do from the cable/fork inspection area of the bell housing.

But my first thought is your front joint especially needs inspection. U joints are a comon, cheap and easy to fix noise on cars this age.

I got a Ford Racing aluminum driveshaft a couple months ago so I don't think its the u joint. But I'll definitely look into all this.
 
Kinda hard to say. It's not super loud except when on a bridge, which is how i found out. But if I had to pick i'd say just moving. Today I looked around and on the driveshaft and the exhaust, but I didnt see any scratches or dents.

Me? I'd put the stands under the rear securely and some chocks under the front wheels so I could go under and look and listen if necessary. But you may not need to.
 
Just putting the rear on the car, and putting it in gear and letting the clutch out could tell you a lot.

No noise....it's the front two wheels.

Noise. It's driveshaft back.


I'm in the same camp as I doubt it's in the bellhousing.
 
If the bridge has solid sides, it could be reflecting the sound so you can hear it better. A Drive up window and the wall can do that too.

I am surprised no goof has told you to hang out the passenger side door and listen while someone else drives your car in the parking lot.

Let us know what you find.
 
Ha, I've gone through stuff like that when looking for bad wheel bearings in other cars. Someone else drives's the car, and I have my head shoved down in the passenger side footwell listening to see if the humming noise is coming from that particular wheel.

Lately, I just hang my gopro off the side of the car and make a short video.
