SCT Xcalibrator 2 , recommendations?

I'm not sure if I'm right, but I heard that SCT Xcalibrator 2 does not come with any performance tunes, but it's more of the dealer's job to make a "performance tune" for it. If this is true, who should I get an Xcalibrator from?

I saw Mustangtuning.com is selling it and asking for all mods done to the car to make a proper tune.

Does anyone know any reputable mail-order tuner places that will load in an exceptional tune into the Xcalibrator 2?

Just order one from a reputable dealer, like MPH and you will be set. It should come with 3 generic tunes and will allow you to adjust several parameters. Keep in mind the tunes are generic, ie, they're general, not specific for your exact car. A true dyno tune is the best way to go, but a tuner will allow you to adjust timing at different rpm ranges, a/f @ WOT, etc. I have an XCal2 and once I learned how to use it, it came in handy. I really like it

i know of one locally...ProDyno...they are the only SCT cerified tuners in my region. they can draw some huge numbers from the 4.6.

http://www.lasotaracing.com/ <-very smart guys there. they are the ones SCT hires to go out and train other dyno operators. they also wrote part of the Xcal2 user manual. highly recomended

I got mine from mustangtuning and it does all i need it to do untill i get a wideband and the pro racer package.

if I had a laptop right now I would have just went with tweecer.

only place i would truely trust with a Mail Order tune is Tim from MPH. I have never heard a negative thing about his Tuning ability...and he has millions of E-Stalkers here who can back that up
I would Contact Tim/Rhonda dirctly about getting a custom mail order tune.

My question to those who got a mail order tune, have you gone back for a dyno tune?

I gained 5 tenths after my dyno tune..my A/F was all screwy with the mail order tune. (Don't ask me where I got mine...I'm not bad mouthing any company...just relating my experience)

XCAL2

Pros...Data logging (if you know how to read that stuff. You can get acurate RPM, water temp readings and such),

Ability to tweak parameters and adjust for gears/tires (Good for weekend warriors or semi serious drag racers...not so much for the DD),

Code reader (gives you the code...need to have a copy of what each code means), Updates and new tunes can be emailed and loaded with your computer.

Cons...You have to shut down car to change tune (removing the fan and fuel pump fuses) If you have a 96 or earlier car you have to disconnect the battery to "reset the adaptive memory" or something like that.),

No user manuel...there is one for download but is very basic. Nothing on how to read the datalogging features or even what all of the parameters than can be read mean.

All of the functions are not available yet. The last I heard the on-board datalogging is still not working. May be updated now...if not you have to have a laptop.

Mine was kind of finicky...there was a loose connection that would cause the buttons to quit functioning. Something about a short in the wiring that required you to remove the button cover and put some electrical tape in the problem area. I never tried to fix it...just traded it in. This was a common problem with the early units. That has been fixed in the later ones.

Switch chip
Pros...Switch tunes on-the-fly. This was the biggest drawback of the Xcal2.

Switch can be located anywhere for easy access.

Set and forget...best for the daily driver and occasional runs at the track.

Cons...No user adjustability. You have to take it back to the tuner to change parameters.

None of the data logging functions of the handheld...if you have a semi serious drag jones you won't be able to tweaks between runs.

I plan on getting the pro racer package and going to a dyno to do some tuning. Thats why I did not care who I bought my xcal2 from. My car is stock engine mod wise. I don't think my K+N is going to overwhelm who ever tunes the xcal's for mustangtuning. after I get the pro racer package the tuner on my car is me.

If I had a laptop I would'nt have even got the Xcal I would have went with tweecer.

the way I see it buy your Xcal from whoever gives you a good deal. If your car is PI swaped or has a lot of mods you want a dyno tune anyways so who cares if a certain shop did the mailorder tune. a good local dyno tune is better anyday than a mailorder tune from a guy who may be good but is 1000 miles away.
