I've got a '98 mustang. Its a V6 with a no start due to a security issue. Its my first mustang its going to be a daily at first til I get my pt cruiser up and going then the build on the mustang starts. But first got to get it fired up. So here's what I know, my buddy took the car to ford for a key. Ford then gave him another key for it and couldn't do anything else with it. Its got 2 keys now and it has a 5spd manual trans. Don't know if the transmission is an important detail or not. But anyway basically the car is good but this security issue is holding me back, what should I look at? What should my starting point be? Is there a wire to ground and disarm the security system? Any ideas?

The code P1260 indicates that the PCM is being told not to let the engine run by the PATS system. In the 96-98 Mustangs, there is a standalone PATS module behind the dash that is the decision maker, and it tells the PCM whether or not to let the car start. If it tells the PCM not to let the car start, the PCM will throw a P1260 code, and it will disable the fuel injectors. The PATS module will also blink the theft light rapidly, to let you know that the reason the car isn't starting is the PATS anti-theft system.

PATS does not disable the starter, or the ignition on 96-98 cars. It just disables injector pulse.

The only way to disable PATS or get around it in any way (other than repairing it and properly programming 2 or more keys) is with a PCM reflash with a custom calibration. The Ford dealer can't do it, Ford IDS software can't do it, and Forscan can't do it. Tuners can do it, but not cost effectively.

We can delete PATS, and cost effectively. Usually cheaper than having one key made by a locksmith. And cheaper than a tow truck.

Okay so what software can do it? I need this done asap and kind of cheaply. I'm buying the car for $600 and I'm at the point where some shops within reasonable distance are charging close to purchase price or more. All I want is to drive this car. I keep seeing tuners that can do it but not for the 98 model. Ford dealerships say that can't touch anything 20 years or older. If I wanted to spend a fortune on this, I'd just get a haltec or something similar. But I'm trying to leave this car alone while I build my PT Cruiser. any advice?

I was thinking about my 93 Grand Cherokee and its security issue it had years ago. Basically, all I had to do was cut a certain wire and ground it out, start it and then unplug and pull out the security module as the Jeep idled. That got me to thinking what if I could just wire the PATS antenna or whatever to switch. Flipping the switch on tells the PATS system that its fine and then allowed the car to run and drive. Now as I said before I highly doubt this is possible, but what if it is possible. Now I know someone is out there that might could point me in a direction. In theory, I know I'll need power and ground but what other wires would be needed? Like I said this is a long shot so I'm not expecting any actual results, merely seeing if anyone has thought the same thing. I also don't expect a lot of responses, anyway if anyone has thoughts let me know.

Find a tuning shop in your area that can tune the PATS system, out.

That is the only [shortcut] that I am aware of and it won't be free.

Yeah, that's what I'm learning for myself. I have been watching videos and reading every forum that says crank no start. I'm starting to think that would be easier and cheaper to just do the engine swap I have planned and doing an aftermarket ECU. I was hoping to save the build for after my current build. But I've got 2-3 more ideas to try before renting a truck and trailer from U-Haul. Found one video where a guy rubbed his keys on one of the back speaker's magnets and it worked just fine. Saw another where he swapped out a 20-amp maxi fuse for a 30-amp maxi fuse and his fired right up after that. Seen another video where his wouldn't even show the mileage but did the 10-minute key in reset trick and it worked fine. Now I should mention that I leave the key in the car with it turned to acc. while I work on the mustang. Every time I notice the theft light isn't flashing or on, I give it a try. Obviously, it doesn't work but I try. Also keep in mind that I have the key like that for hours. I go over to work on the car, it's around 11 AM and i leave the car around 3:30 to go to work. My car has been showing me the mileage but showing theft light.
