Alright, here's the situation. I bought a DSS 331 long block with AFR 185's and an X cam back in September. I have the Track Heat intake, 70mm TB, 75mm Pro-M bullet, BBK cold air kit, and 30lb injectors. I also have shorty heads, h-pipe, flowmasters, and tailpipes. (See nothing real special)

Ever since I first cranked the car, it has sounded funny to me. It only sounds funny to me when the car is under a load, basically anytime i press on the gas pedal. It doesn't make the sound when i rev it up in neutral. Anyway, the motor sounds like a diesel when it's under a load. what could this be? Has anyone ever heard of this?

On another note, I was having surging problems and got a chip burned for the car. it still surges, but not as bad as it did before. before it would surge 800-1000 rpm, now it's just 200 rpm. thing is, when i push in the clutch to slow down to make a turn, the car wants to go dead. What gives? Too much fuel?

if there is any other information you guys need to help me out, let me know!

thanks!

That sound is probably spark knock(detonation), you need to adjust your timing and/or use higher octane fuel.

I cant help you with the surge/stall problem

is your pro-m MAF unit calibrated for the 30lb injectors? Try cleaning the actual MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner, or rotate the MAF 45*, sometimes it's just not sitting in the right spot to get an accurate reading. Are you running a fuel pressure regulator? If so, what's it set at?

The mass air is calibrated for the injectors. I do have an adjustable fuel press reg. it is set a 38lb with the vacuum off. I set the timing at 10, I have a JMS chip in it and this is where they told me to set the fp and timing.

if I had a higher compression ratio than i thought (say 11:1 instead of 9.5:1) could that cause a "knock" that is only noticable when there is a load on the engine?

i really need to get this figured out soon. i miss driving my car and im scared that with too much driving, im gonna break something. i have waaaaay to much money invested in it to have it tear up over something like this!

I appreciate the help guys!

The diesel sound you hear could be piston slap and a little bit is normal on a stroker. I'd make sure it's not a timing issue like detonation first. Piston slap happens when the piston skirt has to be shorter for crank clearance on the stroker and so the piston moves side to side in the bore. My 331 has a little slap, mostly when the engine is cold. Mike
