Selling the 4.6 to get a 18-20k project car underway. Decided on a 94-95 GT with low miles for the body. Figure this will give me a nice solid motor to use for my daily driver while i setup my new motor to swap in. I was thinking about a DSS 331 or 347 with forged internals/crank and 8.5 compression with afr205 heads, a trickflow intake, and FTI custom ground blower cams. Was nervous because i head of problems with the 347's longevity, is this true if you have cams designed specificly for one? Also how much power do you guys think this would be at before a blower or turbo? Before i add the power adder im definitly going to get a T-56 tranny or a TKO or something and probly a 9" rearend. Also, does anyone have a dyno graph of a N/A motor like this? I want to see what kind of power adder will be best. If I have very nice low end tourqe with just the motor, which i think i will, then i would have a hard time justifying the high priced Kenne Bell or even a turbo at that point. A centri blower would be fine as long as the tq curve is nice an flat across the board. Any suggestions on my plan and definitly any downsides/problems i should be aware of before blowing 5000 on a motor. Thanks guys, I am open to all suggestions/opinions. :flag:

im liking the engine choice to begin with....my personal preference is the 331 but either way your fine. From what i understand the 347 oil consumption/longevity issues have become a myth. It was a thing of the past that has been corrected. If you still worry about it then go with the 331, or drop in a 351....

....the AFR 205's are a great head...FTI cam...nothing better...Trickflow intake, good choice, might want to check out the new box intake(depends on if you are gonna go boosted as soon as this motor goes in)

...as far as power adders go, turbo ALL the way....do it right the first time...a well chosen intercooled turbo kit(i suggest big single over twins) is going to give you instant boost, and a nice powerband. And you dont have to worry about parastitic(sp?) loss because exhaust gases turn the compressor wheel, and not the crank like with a blow (make more power, AND less stress on the motor). If not the Turbo then id go with the Kenne Bell 2200(Blowzilla) with the Flowzilla inlet and the water/alcohol injection....the Torque will be insane, and the curve will be a flat as can be, and be pretty instant. Unlinke a centrifugal blower which builds boost with RPMs....

I'm reading about the turbo kits right now. I have heard a million different stories as to what all needs to be swapped from a stock mustang to make a turbo kit fit/work well. I think i am goin to go this route in the long run but will try to just get a solid motor in there for now. Dont think i can afford both at once unless i nix the tranny and rear end supports for a while...power vs. safety...hmmm.... :bang:

well if turbo will be down the road, then just stay NA until that point then....of course you will want to have a new custom cam made when you do decide to go turbo....im just a big believer in the Turbo, its the best way to make power...

i do have one bit of advice, though:

remember that these cars are almost 10 years old, so in your planning, be sure to include extra time and money for unexpected fixes. if you are not doing your own work, don't forget the labor part. for example, on mine:

- the front and rear bushings were bad and the swaybar was broken (a common problem), so while i was in there, i decided to go with bbk control arms and lowering springs. i could have just replaced the bushings, but it was the right time to upgrade the suspension, so i went with it. $500 of unexpected expenses though.

- pinion seal and rear tranny seals needed to be replaced - $70 (incl fluids)

- the motor mounts needed to be replaced (common prob) - $120

- the radiator has a small leak (can't fix, common prob) - $400

- replace hoses and fluids - $150

- i wanted to be emissions legal, so i had to get a h-pipe with cats, and i got new o2 sensors so the. $250 for the h-pipe, $80 for the o2 sensors

- there was more, but i think this gives you the idea. for the gory details, go here: http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=468162

everything said and done, mine ended up being $4700 (includes $1500 for labor) for fixups and a "thumper" headswap with trick flow intake. it was about $2500 more than expected, and the a/c still doesn't work, the radiator has't been done yet, the air only comes out the defroster vents (no matter the switch position), there is a creaking noise in the steering system (probably tie rods or ball joints), and it needs a new power steering pump. UGH!

learn from my experience, include alot more time and money than you can name for unexpected stuff.

Yeah the old ideas of 347s using oil can still happen in some of the cheap kits with the oil rings in the wrist pin. But a CHP 347 will be solid and give you a long time of worry free power. I would look at a trick flow R or an edelbrock RPM II intake manifold, both will give you some great power.

I'll trade you straight up :)

If your car is payed off, it would be pretty fun to sell it then find a 94-95 and mod it right off the bat with the extra cash.
Yah i cant wait! I'm not looking forward to the little fixes that he is mentioning but i cannot wait for that motor swap, still debating the whole stroker kit though. Thinking that may just be asking for trouble, especially when i can just get it to a 306 and H/C/I swap and a nice turbo kit and be pulling the number i am looking for and more! What is your opinion on the stroker kits? :flag:

Your not putting this on a stock block, are you? If so, stop right there and do some research. I was thinking of doing a 347 with an afr 205 head and all the guys I talked to on hardcore said the stock 302 block is weak and i'll need to upgrade if I wanna stay 302 based. You WILL need an R or a dart block for that power your planning!
