hello Stangnet, looking to sell the scion xa I'm currently driving so that I can get back into a foxbody.

however I need to keep the plates because i use a parking placard for work and the plate number is on the placard. I won't be able to use my placard if i have different plates.

my question is how can i go about keeping my plates when i sell the car? What would be my steps to take as well as the new owner? This is in california. Thanks so much and look forward to getting back behind the wheel of a stang soon!

Usually when you sell a vehicle privately, you remove the tags. Call your local DMV they will tell you what you need to do to transfer the tag.

Why can't you just update your work place with your new number/plate >?

Call your local DMV and ask them what you need to do to transfer your current tags, or what you need to do to put them on hold until you can get another vehicle. They may even have a FAQ page on their web site. :nice:

I called and a guy (sounded like a dickhead) said I can't keep my plates unless they're personalized. Can't be true!

That sounds about right... Unfortunately. If you had the fox ready for transfer of tags then it would not be a problem. The problem as I see it is that you don't have a vehicle ready for transfer.

we can only apply for it once a year in may. The one I have will become effective this july. If I use it with different plates it's not valid and I'd get a ticket.

Is it a govt job? That's crazy.

Plus it's California. Sounds pretty crappy on both ends.
