sensor question...

We just replaced my bros clutch cable, and clutch quadrant. We put it all back together with the upr triple thingy and it works fine. Now the problem is we cant get a sensor to line up right b/c the nuts are too hard to get on. Its the little black sensor box that sits above the gas pedal, and when the clutch comes down, the quadrant hits the sensor and pushes it down. WHAT DOES THIS SENSOR DO?? It seems to drive perfectly fine with it unused, but you know how that stuff is? I was told it was a neutral safety switch...any ideas?

neutral safety switch was the first thing that came to mind. to see if it is, try disconnecting the switch and then try to crank the car. if the car won't crank - then that's what it is. good luck man.
