i have a 95 grand prix se.. its my DD for while my stang is up for the winter!!!
i want a temp/permanent Fix here... this summer my sunroof broke its a factory electric sunroof... well it broke and i had to slide it by hand... well it snaped and it would flip the wrong way, and it did so while i was driving on a main road about 50 55mph, well the wind took over and ripped it completely off the car and bounced and slid down the road on my way to work! i went back to get it, Didnt shatter, scratch or anything and i tried to get it replaced and they want $400 to do it.. i no its not a Ford but fixing it will prevent me from driving a mint stang in the snow this winter, so i need it fixed like now! im not payen 400 cars a POS... ive already dumped more money into it then what i payed for my mustang! i was thinken about pumping silicon into it to seal it up, but im affraid the silicon wont hold the window on.. and it will fly off, again... im open for any and every idea out there... please help me! theres no such thing as dumb ideas, just dumb people! Help me out.. do you think the silicone will work ? i dont have a tape welder and i dont know how to weld or i would have done it already!

or even cheaper? cardboard and duct tape? but that probably wont last the winter...UNLESS you used enough tape.

it sounds like a problem you might not be able to fix on your own. I'd shop around and find the cheapest place to do it.

edit: just drop the glass in and duct tape it/silicone it so it stays the winter??? maybe there's some adhesive you can use instead of tape...

u dont have to have a welder.. hell.. most maw and paw muffler shops with a welder would prolly hack it up for less than 75 bucks...


down the road from me is a guy who does nothing BUT weld... thats it. u bring in something that needs welded and he does it... would be a HELL of a lot cheaper than 400 bucks.

if you dont want the sunroof a piece of sheetmetal, some RTV sealant and pop rivets will take care of it. you can weld it, but you are most likely going to warp the roof.
if you really want to keep the sunroof I am afraid you are at the mercy of whatever shop you take it to.

People around here cut Plexiglass then silicone it or tape it down.

+1 for jb welding.. jb welded a rocker in place once. thing never broke again!

Position the sunroof in place.
Tape off the gap in the sunroof with painter's tape.
Apply a liberal amount of BLACK RTV to the gap all the way around the sunroof and finish it off with a plastic puddy knife.
Allow it to cure a full 48 hours before removing the tape.

Whola... leaks and dropped objects are erradicated.

Does it have a metal frame surrounding the glass? If it does, take it to a welding shop and have them tack weld it in place. You should be able to do this for $20.00. From there, buy a tube of 100% silicone caulking (won't dry out and will be flexible for the next 10-20 years.) Use masking tape to tape the edge of the roof and the frame of the sunroof (leaving an 1/8th of an inch lip on both.) Finally, pump the caulking into the gap surrounding the sunroof. Make sure you fill it as deeply as possible and avoid air pockets. After it's filled, take a 1" wide putty knife and drag it over the entire opening (stopping every now and then to wipe excess caulking off the knife.) When done, peel the tape and allow it to sit for a day or so and then you'll be all set.

the roof is metal, the sunroof is glass and the brackets are plastic... i think thats why it broke in the first place~!
