SERPENTINE BELT measured by CANS?

Ok since I did the smog pump delete (which i discovered wasn't hooked up anyway). I needed a sepentine belt that is shorter than the regular one.. Well i went to the auto parts store and we pul a couple of belts and they all had the measurement of 5 CANS or 4CANS. WTF is a CAN???????????

I need an 89 1/2" belt. So I figured since it was the smog pump only I was getting ride of I might as well just choose the belt with the WITHOUT A/C option and that should work..

But i still want to know waht a CAN = (EXAMPLE: 1 CAN = 4")

I've never heard of this, but to me its sounds like its reffering the ammout of ribs on the belt. I believe ours are 6-rib. Every brand of belt I have ever seen had the actual length or at least a part number written on it. Any half-smart parts place should have the manual that cross-refferences that part number to the dimensions of the belt. What brand were you looking at BTW?
From my experience working at a parts department, the belt you are looking for would have 6K895 as the part number, but that all depends on brand.

some brands are metric, but yeah it should be a 6kxxxxx P/N...

i've never heard of a can being a measurement for a belt.

ProKiller me either, til i went to Advanced Auto Parts. No measurement anywhere... just 5 cans...

getting the right size belt is easy, you just have to know what the codes are:

if you get a goodyear belt the way to read the code is as follows:

for a 6 rib 89.5 in belt it will be

4060895, 4 being a standard prefix, 06 representing the number of ribs, and 0895 being the length.

for other brands it's about the same but with some of the numbers juxtaposed:

duralast for example is:

0895k6


dayco belts are similar to goodyear's codes:

5060895

instead of a 4 for a prefix dayco's are 5, but the other numbers apply.



tell the guys at autozone to do a part search for 895k6 for the non gatorback belt or 4060895 for the gatorback brand.
