My serpentine belt is cracked in multiple places and it's time for me to replace it. I have never done this before, though, so how do I do it? I know I have to release tension on the belt first via the belt tensioner, but how exactly is this done? I thought I would take a couple of digital pictures of the original belt route so that I can duplicate it while putting the new belt on. Any other advice? What tools do I need?

You need a long handle 3/8" drive breaker bar. This fits into a 3/8" square hole in the tensioner and allows you to relieve the tension with one finger

Get a Goodyear Gator Belt, keep the old belt in with the spare, inspect your idler pullies while you have the belt off. New idler pullies are $14 at AutoZone if yours do not spin free and true and need replaced.

The tensioner is spring loaded and just moves left and right.

I think i was told something like 20ft-lb. i think thats why i bought inch-lb torque wrench, because it was some small amount, that my big Tq wrench wouldn't go down low enough. but please check that number. Its not that much at all

Never mind, I changed the belt this afternoon in about 7 minutes. It was way easier than I thought it was! I thought I would have to remove the tensioner, but you're right. It's just spring loaded and it moved out of the way pretty easily. I don't have a breaker bar, so I just used a short 3/8" drive socket wrench. It worked just fine.

after a constant barrage of "which gears" and "what exhaust sounds best" threads, youre still under the impression that people actually use the search function?

Ya know, I always wondered why people didn't just search and find a thread that may be 3 years old but relates to the topic they want to discuss .. and just bump the thread. All these threads like you mentioned make the search function damn near useless, unless you want to read a whole lot of nothin' for hours. If there were just a couple threads for any given topic, "super hijacked" so to speak, it would make searching much easier. My pennies.

Your not to late!

You just saved the day!

Looked all over the net for a print and just joined this forum. I hit a water puddle the other day and the belt came off my 01 GT. The belt was not hurt just sliped off. Has any one heard of this before?

Nice to be a new member.:SNSign:

Ahh, but he said that he searched the whole net and found this one which tells me that Google is being used to find old threads more than the in-house search function.

With that being said...glad ya found us Stangsnharleys and welcome to :SNSign:

5L5, if it makes you feel any better, I saved that picture you posted for the future when my belt cracks and I have to replace it.

Also, I use the search function all the time as well. Must be a "senior member" thing.
