Serpentine belt shredded. Can I get it to the shop?

Try calling some local parts stores too. Tell them what your situation is and ask if they can deliver one to you.

As for the change, you'll need some type of lever to take tension off the belt by means of the tension pully. A good breaker bar usually works, but a 1/4" drive ratchet with a long handle (or bar slid over the handle) will work. There is usually a square hole in the pully tension arm for this.

1/4"? Weird, I guess they changed on the 4.6's? Mine's a 3/8". I just use a ratchet. I'm a little late, but I wouldn't recommend driving it with no belt. No power steering, no water pump, it would run off the battery, etc. etc.. Main thing is the no water pump, that water in the heads would heat up FAST!

I just got back from the parts store so I've got the belt. I wore shorts every day for the past month but today it is jeans. I can't wait to get out there in the Florida swamp heat to put this on! To push the tensioner back, which way do I push it if I were standing in front of the car? left or right?

push it so that the pully moves away from the belt. I think it will be toward the drivers side.

Stick the ratchet in the square hole, and pull towards you. On mine, the tensioner is on the passenger side, and you have to pull towards the passenger side. Not sure on yours though, good luck.

just a thought but depending on how long you drove the car after the belt came off but u could have drained youre battery . might want to have someone wait after work to either help you and/or give u a jump. gl

All is well. It took two people pushing down on that damn thing and one to thread the belt over the alternator. Car fired right up. All is well. I'm keeping one of those ratchets in the car from now on.

mine just shredded today and i drove it to firestone to have it changed its a bout a 2 mile drive with about 6 stoplights better know how to downshift and use the emergency brake

Glad to hear it. It's generaly a good idea to keep a basic tool kit in the car. You can probaly pick up one at W-almart for about $20. be sure to get one that has both wratchet and screw drivers.

I actually used to keep that kind of stuff in the car but took it out because I didn't like all that stuff in the trunk. I carry a gas can, jumper cables, battery post cleaner but that is it. I'd like to get one of those Roush (SP?) tool kits that installs in the trunk lid but even them the things in there wouldn't have been what I needed. Now, carrying my torque wrench and a spare belt is a good idea! If I had that on me it would have been a five minute job.

carrying a spare belt is a good idea also. when ever I get mine replaced, I keep the old one so that in a emergency I can use it to get me to the nearest service station or parts store.

Did you look into why your belt shredded? was it just old and worn or is something else causing it? My money would be on just being old.

If you don't like storing things like a small tool kit in the trunk, try and fit it under the rear seat. Lots of space under there.
