serpentine question

i have a 68 that was a straight 6 that i am converting to v8. i bought a new model ford engine that came with a serpentine system. should i keep it or change for the old style pulley system. are there gonna be problems with it fitting if i keep it?

I would keep the serpentine system. The old V belts are crap if you ask me. My car is serpentine.

Does yours have the OEM Ford serpentine setup? If so, you don't need the smog pump. But I would definitely keep the serp setup. Alot of people convert to serpentine.

I have a serpentine setup from March. I went with the black ones because I didn't want that polished auminum look. Mine has AC but no power steering. They have setups for most applications.

is there an OEM setup that I can use to drive the water pump and alternator? not looking to buy a reverse rotation water pump either

ya it was oem but im making it a carb engine. i want that to be old school. know of a good carb manifold for 5.0.

yes in fact there is, check out early 80's crown vics and grand marquis. my 83 grand marquis used a serpentine belt, but not the reverse rotation water pump. as i recall the alternator and air pump were on one belt, and the a/c and power steering were on another belt.

Very dooable

5.0 Alternator pulley
5.0 crank pulley using the spacer provided with my pro products damper
1980's 351w WP pulley







And very inexpensive, only downside is finding the WP pulley.

Stick with the serpentine. I like the edelbrock rpm air gap. You might need a drop base air cleaner. Have fun. Move the dipstick back to the front of the engine where it belongs !

I have a question in regards to the same subject. I have a 1991 Mustang GT 5.0 Engine that I am assuming has a reverse rotation water pump in its serpentine system. Can I just drop that set up in my 1967 Mustang or do I need to also install a radiator for reverse rotation that fits a 67 Mustang?

Radiators don't determine the rotation of the water pump.

That being said, I think the inlets/outlets on the radiator will be different in your car vs the 5.0 motor. Might want to get a proper cross flow radiator with the outlets in the right spot for the 5.0. Its a worth while swap tho.

If you keep the OEM serpentine, you will want to run an electric fuel pump, to make the install easy. Also, the OEM serpentine is a pretty deep system. Make sure you have enough room for a good fan and radiator shroud.
In the '66 below, I moved the engine back 5/8" and still couldn't fit the stock engine driven 5.0 clutch fan, due to 3" thick radiator core.

One more thing... where is the dipstick located on your engine? If it's on the side, you'll need to relocate it to the front when you change pans. It's a very easy job.

what if the thing that sucks up th oil is geared for a rear sump. i doesnt look like it will work if i run a front sump. how do i convert it

Same oil pump, different pan and pickup.
