I have a 2002 V6 Mustang. About three days ago, the engine starts shaking and I have a monumental loss of power. The shaking is at it's worst while idling. It is also sputtering and backfiring, and I have an odd odor in the cabin. My gas mileage has also gone right into the crapper.

Thus far, I have changed all of the spark plugs & cables, gotten an oil change and complete fuel line service, a new fuel filter, and two new O2 sensors installed. Nothing has helped.

Getting a diagnosis from an auto parts store tells me that it's running lean. All of this started without any warning, while I was stopped at a light.

I am out of ideas, and it doesn't help that my automotive knowledge is pretty limited. Please help if you can, and thank you in advance.

Those 3.8's are notorious for blowing head gaskets. Water can get into the cylinder, which won't compress, so something has to give. I have a souvenir bent piston rod from a 3.8 I fixed up.

I know in my 05 V6 mustang, they have an over heat protection that makes the car run really rough (alternates cylinders). But it runs rough whether on startup or not right?

And the guys who told you it was running lean, that's all they could do for you?

Yeah, he said he wasn't sure what the problem was. I have heard certain mechanics can charge you for use of their diagnostic equipment. Would this be more comprehensive?

I would personally probably just take it to the mechanic and have him tell you what's wrong, lol. Won't they usually tell you what's wrong or give you a quote for free? I dunno. Couldn't hurt to talk to one and see what they can do for you. Hard to tell what avenue to take when I can't personally see how the engine is running and how rough it is.
