Hey All,
I am in the market for an 88-91 GT .. I want this car to be daily driveable but still hit 12's. I also want the car to have a new motor and World Class T-5 Tranny with 3:55 gears(i do alot of highway miles, so no 3:73) ... I am wondering if any can help me pick which motor/block to start with... I am going to be on a budget also and I have 2 years from now until around sepetember of 2007 to get it driveable and reliable with plent of power. I was looking into a 347 stroker... but to be honest I have no idea what it is and where to get it.. I also still need to buy the car so putting aside $5,000 for that ... Since im planning on doing motor + tranny swap should I just get the shell of the car or should I buy an equipped and remove/replace those parts... I need any information I can get.. Also if you propose a part/engine i should get please provide a link to a website where i can buy/look at it ... thanks for all replies in advance ... please help - RedeemedSoul :hail2:

Building a car takes serous money, time, and effort/skill. $5K will only get you a decent car, your going to spend at least another $15K for what you want. You can hit 12's and still be very drivable without a huge list of mods. Of course buying a rolling chassis and building from there can save some money in the long run.

What is your skill level and experience doing this kind of thing.

should i start out with a rolling chassis considering i want to put in a new world class t-5 tranny with 3:73 gears and i also want to get a new engine/motor, but im not sure what i want to get? .... i dont want to use the stock engine because of reliability but i want to get something that will last and be powerful ... i was looking at a 347 but i have no idea what it is and what i need. Do i need cams, shafts, bores? or wat ... i have no idea...

I think a decent built 357 (.03 over 351W) with aluminum heads and mild cam with like a vortech-S trim would be super reliable and make lots of power, while not getting to bad of gas milage cause you wont be in boost while just cruising.

Any motor that runs in the 12's though I think it would be wise to up-grade to a Tremec. Not that a T-5 can handle it,but it just better insurance and can take just about any other mods you can throw at it.

Course,it you wanted to do it cheap,I would look for a 351W with bout 10.5:1 compression ratrio, though in a solid flat tappet cam with, put some aluminum heads on (like Edelbrock victor jr.'s good price/hp ratio),and a 750 carb with a nitrous plate.

You don't need a 347 to run 12's. Realistically, you don't need to get deep into the engine to run 12's, but on average, a good heads, cam intake package with the proper exhaust and fuel mods are what most guys do.

My car was daily driven and ran 12.80's on drag radials. The same tires I drove to work on. I ran the trickflow package. I would do 3.73 gears.

where exactly could i find/buy all of this stuff... and what do u mean by a decent built 357? ... vortech-s trim? and other's lol ... i wouldnt mind having it supercharged... i was looking at crate engines but they are expensive, even tho if they are reliable i wouldnt mind paying for it...

I kind of dont want to stay with the same engine, just because i plan on getting an engine that has been beaten and old and used... i also dont kno if i need to get a stroker kit or what... 3:73 gears and 3:55 gears after i have done extensive research (read all the faq's from many sites) i have decided 3:55 may be better for me on the highway .. i will be driving 100-300 mile trips every 2-3 weeks so I kind of want the 3:55's...

A 357 is a 351W thats is bored .030 over. You can find a 351W for sale in your local paper and have a machine shop rebuilt it and put in some decent part. The 351W is alot beefer compared to a 302,especialy the early model ones.Get some good heads that arnt to bad price wise (like Trick Flow twisted wedge or edelbrock perfor RPM's can get them around $1200 or so,AFR's are close to $1400),find a decent off the self hyd. roller grind and buy the crane reto fit roller lifters.Put a good intake on and it will run 12's,and a super charger and it will probably go low 11's.

Or build the slight more radical, but certainly streetable nitrous assisted motor and it will probable get into the 11's.

If all the dude wants is 12s then why is everyone spilling info for windsors and superchargers.

a stock bottom end and a good HCI combo is a garaunteed mid 12 car, assuming you know how to drive and launch. thats all there is to it.

Dont forget to upgrade injectors and fuel pump while you there. But thats the little stuff.

Because for alittle more it will be alot more reiable, have more potental for the future, and make more power at it.While still being streetable.

But you are quite right,it he just wants to get into the 12's and is fine with that, then yes a 302/306 with h/c/i and full exhaust will probably do.But if you start from scratch, might as well start with a better foundation eh?

and btw,the 302 is all a Windsor

I want to run 12's for now but i want the capabilities of running 10's ... i was looking at a 347 crate engine but its $7,000 from FRPP ... i'm not exactly sure if i want to dish that out ... I am really going against the stock motor because i want it to be reliable .... how much can a 351W be had for and how hard would install be? ...

I picked up my old 74' 357 short block with all machining, balancing, ARP bolts and a FRPP SFI balancer for $750.The stock 351W block are good to 600hp no problems at all,the early block (74' and below)are good to 750hp.

Actualy,I still got it and its only bout a year old, would still be in the car to if the 408 did go in.

edit: that was also with the fox body pan,oil pump, crane version of the TFS stage 2 cam,and a steel fly wheel for a T-5!
