Anyone know who distributes sheet metal that is made with original tooling? I'm looking for a door skin for a 65 Fastback. Most distributors seem to have the offshore knockoffs which are basically ***** as I understand it.

Might as well pay money up front for a US panel that fits rather than $75.00 for a panel that will need another $200 worth of work just to get it aligned.

Thanks for the help.

sorry

Doesn't exist. Can't get an OE tooling trunklid, or OE tooling quarters either.

Fenders, hoods, taillight pannels, valence, gravel pans are availible. They aren't perfect. The steel they use now is current OE grade high tensile (which is good) but thiner (which doesn't matter beacuse of #1) but they don't pull "clean" off the dies because the dies were designed around lower tensile steel.

The rest of the stuff is "El Chinito" as my customers call it and of various grades of crap.

Some of the OE tooling has been destroyed, and whatever has been pulled off what is left as NOS is $$$$.

The repop panels that I've seen vary in quality. Some of it is unusable junk, but most of it will work fine, although your bodyman will probably need to work on it a little to get it to fit. There are still NOS panels out there, but they're insanely expensive, and probably only appropriate for 100-point concours cars.

Here's what I never understood about "OEM tooling." The tool will eventually wear out right ? Then have to be remade. I mean everyone can call it it oem "style" tooling. But a tool staying around that long seems far fetched. Unless they have the tooling which originally made the die.

Good one...this guy is about a 15 minute drive from my house. He doesn't have door skins but has other stuff so good to know. He's also got 2 - 66 Factory GT 4spd Fastbacks he might be selling for those who may be interested (one 'A' code and one 'K' code).

I work (laid off right now) at a place that stamps and assembles parts for the Ford Explorer. There have been millions of them made. If parts go out of spec the die is worked on before another run. It can go bad during the run and when that happens the press line has to be shut down so it can be fixed. If they are taken care of they can last a long time. I never did hear of one that had to be replaced.

I wouldn't buy a door skin if I could find a decent door. Even if you buy a used door that is good but not perfect it can probably be fixed cheaper than a junk skin can be put on and made to look good.

My dad was looking through a catalog (maybe NPD), and they had OEM fenders for about 3 times the cost listed as a thicker metal too. (I don't think it is NOS.)

Are these worth it? It sounds like they should be better as you are paying a lot more.

Yeah, the ford tooling parts cost more, but the fit tends to be much better.
