Just before I put the mustang to sleep for the winter I noted the shifter felt really loose when it was in neutral. I tore it apart the other day and the bushing (the first 2 pics) the shifter ball sits in looks to be in good shape. Anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be? ALL the bolts on the shifter are tight so I know its not that. Its a Hurst short throw and a T5 tranny. Here's some pics.

That bushing should clear up the loose feeling. Was it loose with the stock shifter, or just the new aftermarket one?
So I located the return springs and they look to be in good shape and I don't believe them to be the source of the problem either. Here are two more pics and a short 20 second clip of what I'm talking about. Thanks to everyone whos helped out so far and to anyone who has any other info!

If you put your hand in the shift ball receptable (where the plastic bushing normally resides in the trans), is there any slop?
With the shifter on the bench, do you feel any slop in it? Does the cup fit the ball on the end of the lever nicely?
I'd have to dink around with little testing like that to see if I can change the issue. I've even been known to use stuff like duct tape around the ball to see if the looseness abates when the shifter is inserted back into the trans (you don't drive like this - it's just to see if there's a tolerance issue since we cant see in there).
