shifter free play

Just wondering how much free play Compared to neutral (several inches of freeplay) in the shifter is normal when the car is in gear? Is there any easy way of tightening this?

When my tranny is in gear I have very little play. Actually the only time I felt play in my shifter when it was in gear was when bolts were coming loose on my short throw shifter. Almost sounds like you have bent shifting forks if you have a lot of play.

There's pretty much no play in my shifter when in gear, but then I have not had a stock shifter for quite a while, but still, I don't think there should be much play at all.

There will be a few inches of play if the shifter 'cup' came out when the shifter was installed.

Or it could be broken.

The shifter cup is a couple $ at 50resto.com and the ball end of the shifter goes inside it.

I had that problem before...
