Shifter Problem Need Help!!!

I Am New To This Board And Just Had A Couple Questions. I Just Bought A 92 Mustang Gt With An Auto Trans. The Problems Are, The Shifter Is Sloppy And Won't Click Into Each Gear, The Car Won't Start Unless You Pull The Shifter Into Reverse. And The Nuetral Safety Switch Is Good. And Then, After The Car Starts You Can Put It Into Park But Then The Reverse Lights Stay On.

What I Am Wondering Is If The Shifting Mechanism Is Bad Or Does The Cable Need To Be Adjusted? Any Help Would Be Great!

Thanks In Advance.

I think i have seen Adam post about this before and *I think* he said you could adjust the gear selector (as you know, yours sounds like it is off by a bit).

good luck and bump for ya.

almost sounds like your going to have to pull apart your console and make sure nothing is bent of pushed out of place, I used to have a pic of what things are supposed to look like but unfortunately I'm at work and can't find it...... other than that it could be bent shifter linkage.......

It sounds like the cable. The neutral safety switch and reverse luight switch are internal to the tranny -- there are no adjustments anyplace.

Loosen the bolt on the shifter cable at the transmission, put the selector in OD and tighten the cable back up while taking any slack out of it. If this doesn't fix it, your cable is probably stretched and needs to be replaced. At least, this is all my opinion...
