ok so here's the deal, my friends and i decided to go out and race from a stop, i own a 99 gt 5 speed all stock, he has a 99 gt auto with an h pipe, cold air intake, and flowmasters, off the line we were neck and neck through first and second but he started pulling on me after that and beat me. now i have a few questions,

whats the best rpm to shift at when racing from a stop?

whats the best rpm to launch from at a stop?

will these numbers change if i get gears?

and what will those numbers be?

thanks in advance, i know i sound stupid but i know the people from these forums know what they're talking about.

You race from a stop at the track no matter what. Why include that in your question? No street racing or you get the lock. hint hint

First of all...the h-pipe will give him a slight advantage.

A total stock GT I'd shift at 5500. Depending on tires your launch can be upwards of 4500. Find a place to practice the best launch without breaking the tires loose. Sounds like you are OK on the launch if you are neck and neck through second.

Gears won't change the shift points...just how quickly you get to them. I raced my friends 97 and I was shifting into 3rd when he was in the middle of 2nd. I have 4.10's to his 3.27's.

I get the best result when I shift at 5,500rpm.

It should...you are into the power band quicker. Just need the practice becasue the bigger the gear the easier it is tio break the tires loose.

Driver mod.....

A auto should not beat a 5 speed with a good driver. I had an 04 stock 5 speed with a buddys full bolt on auto, we raced many times and I always won. He even had 305/315 tires out back and had the advantage there. He would get me out of the hole by about 1/2 a car, then i would run him down and put a few legnths on him. (think it was more him leaving a bit ealier than being faster, I always wait for the other guy to move when racing on a closed course).

You don't launch a car on street tires, best bet is to take off at idle or at no more than 1k. I found it best to just have my foot on the throttle barely above idle so I wounldn't punch it too hard and start the tire burning freenzy. Take off pretty soft, get going then hammer down, takes some finesse(sp) and practice but I was able to pull 1.9's on 4.30 gears and sumitomo htrz 1's. It can be done and u should not be beat by a bolt on auto... now an auto that has a built trans and a stall with sticky's, watch out.
