I unscrewed a plastic circular nut from the trunk, and the shaft fell into the hole, and I still cannot get the shock off. What I am doing wrong?

Yes the lower bolts are undone. I found a diagram online, and I saw that what I unscrewed was not the right thing. In the trunk there are two posts with threads sticking up, one on each side of the trunk. What are these? I unscrewed one, and the bolt fell in a hole, and now I can't get it out. What is this? Thank you

It sounds like the shocks' threaded shanks. If the shank has a couple of flat spots towards the bottom (for a crescent wrench or small open-end wrench to fit on), that sounds like the shocks.

The rear end needs to be jacked up a hair to get the shock out. Be real careful though, since the shocks are what locate the axle in an upward vertical plane.

Good luck.

The car is on jack stands, as it is still up from the winter. It is not the shanks, the diagram online showed a pic of the trunk, and what I unscrewed is not for the shock. If something was to fall out of the trunk through the bottom, would it fall on top of the gas tank?

Yes. It will be a little painful to get it out if you decided to. If so i hope your gas tank doesnt have too much gas! Think you might have to loosen the bands holding gas tank near rear of car bumper, loosen bolts at filler neck to body, and lower tank a little bit and you should be able to get a piece of card board and slide nut out from there. If you decide to do this please be very careful as gas tanks are a lot heavier than they look! I had trouble with mine and it only had a 3 to 4 gallons in it. Shouldnt need to bolts holding bands all the way out. Just enough to lower tank about inch. Have jack supporting tank for safety sake.

Im wondering if its just a safety cap to put over threaded end.

I actually came across the same thing. is the nut you took off down in interior body panel same area as the shock or is it outside of that. there is a plug that just simply seals a hole or it might be a bolt to mount the frame to the body, but the nut you are talking about goes to a bolt that runs through a hole in the frame and up through the body. good luck getting it back up through the frame. your sholk mount is down in the interior panel where the is a round cap.
