So this is the deal, i wanna get 4.10s. after searching and discussing, looks like thats my final choice. Now i brought my 98 cobra to a shop with a pretty good reputation, they specialize in turbos, supercharger installs, engine swaps, bla bla bla.. anyways... i tell them i wanna have 4.10's installed and they gave me a quote of 800 for the gears and the install.. so i giggle to myslef and figure they must be overcharging me for the gears.. so i find the gears somewhere else, and then i ask them how much to just have them installed. they told me around 550 but no more then 600.
Now call me stupid if im wrong, but is that not just A LITTLE PRICY????? I want to install them myself... is it a BIG JOB? and what would i need to do?
if not, does anyone have any other ideas??? Im at a loss here...

If you lived in San Diego you could get it installed by the best for $250.

I paid $350 to have my 4.10s and SpeedCal installed and I felt like I got ripped. Find another shop, hell a Ford dealer probably wouldnt charge that much !!!

Jeez...it would be cheaper to drive here...party in New Orlaens for the weekend while you had your gears installed then drive home.

I have never even heard of anyone paying 1K for gears on a mustang. I think around $200-$300 is pretty standard as far as labor goes for the install. At least that's what the going rate is around here.

BTW doing it yourself would be too large a job for most non experienced people, just FYI since no one chimed in. Its not a simple bolt on for sure.

gears are not an easy install. atleast not without the proper tools and knowledge. i would keep looking for other shops. BTW are you talking about USD or canadian currency? just noticed you are in Montreal.

Ford dealer charged me $280 install and then the rest was for the bearings and fluids. The fluids along were around $50. Take it to Ford.

since we are on the topic....i have an uncle who does a lot of maintainance on heavy machinery and used to have REAL muscle cars when he was a kid and has a few of his own joy rides now (lotus)...he knows car internals theres no question in that lol...my dad talked to him about doing a gear job on my car and said that he could probably do it without the special equipment that they have, the way they used to do it back then...im not exactly sure what the process is but i think its greasing the teeth and winding the tranny until it seeds in....can this be done on our cars?

I paid $250 Canadian for the install of my 4:10s

The gears were about $300 Cdn.

Chip to recal. the speedo $500 Cdn.

Aluminum DS was $300 Cdn

If they're saying $600US just to install the gears alone...robbery.

You have to understand the cost of living in San Diego is much higher then in N.D. The average house is 400-650K. So labor costs will be more. Also the averge cost for a gear change in San Diego is about $450. So $250 is a steal
