I had a hard time getting the lower rubber boot out.....I ended up taking the whole center console out and cleaning it while it was out lol...That was a bit of a pain cause I didn't know that there was 2 sheet metal screws holding the radio part of the console to the dash....I bet now I could do it in 45 minutes or so maby less...I would get a shifter gasket from Cobra Bob it makes less mess and makes it so there is less vibe's through the shifter handle...And I would look into a MGW I love the feel of mine

Me too. I used a small wrench without removing the console when I had my '89 GT. Tore up my knuckles a bit, but it only took about an hour as I recall.

Edit: Just put new silicone around the base where it seals onto the trans and bolt it down. T5 shifters are a lot more straighforward than the external rail types.

there was no factory gasket there (besides the silicone) so you won't find one at a parts store
