Drivetrain Short Throw Shifter !

Hey everybody,

New member here, this may have been answered in a previous post. I am picking up my '13 GT in the next couple of weeks, currently I am stuck out working.

I am looking at getting a short throw shifter ASAP, I had a hurst in my last Stang and loved it. Does anyone have any experience with the Hurst Billet 2 Shifter or the or the Barton Industries with the bracket. I am also open to other suggestions that anyone has based on previous experience.

Do some more research and clue in on MGW. I'm exceptionally happy with mine and I did a bunch of research - finally settled on MGW and I'm glad I did. However, I have heard very good things about the Barton/bracket combo as well. I just liked the fact that MGW engineered a COMPLETE solution to all of the stock shifters weaknesses.

If your getting a 2013 then this is the one you want. I have one on order myself after doing much research.

^ ^ What he said, the link he gave you is the one for 2011 and up. Watch the videos and you will see the work that they put into it. No band aid fixes in this shifter.

Yeah I watched them last night. I'm not the OP, but I was looking for a shifter and I really like this as well. I just wish I could feel it for myself.

I just installed the MGW on my 2013 and I love the love and performance of the shifter. Install was fairly simple yet a bit lengthy. One thing is bothering me though, after the installation of the new shifter, I'm getting extra noise coming from the car. It can best be described as a muffled rubbing sound, and a little bit of whine. I'm wondering if this is normal? Is there a break-in period for these shifters? If anyone can chime in with their own experiences or thoughts, please do so

be aware Barton, MGW and probably Hurst, too, will significantly increase cabin noise on the car. I recommend you try out the stock shifter first, if no-likey, buy a no-noise bracket like Steeda's red bushing one and change out the knob for a nice pool-ball job. You might be surprised how good stock can be.

No extra noises, post install of my mgw. Did you get the extra insulation and heat shield? Could you be hearing more NVH? Have you noticed any vibration? Just brain storming here.

Thanks for the reply, I just wanted to make sure that the added noise was something normal and that I'm not doing any damage to my car. I'm already aware that the transmissions on these cars have been a sore spot for many people. I'd wondered if the addition of a short throw shifter can lead to any problems with an already potentially problematic transmission. I'd already added a Hurst short throw shifter to my 05 GT and never had any problems with the shifter or the transmission.

Did not get the heatshield, I did use the dynamax that was provided to me. The shifter does not seem to vibrate. I spoke to George at MGW and he advised that some extra noise was normal because of the deletion of the massive rubber grommet that was attached to the rear install bracket with two tie wraps(this grommet is supposedly what absorbs a great deal of vibration/noise). He also advised that since I did not have the heat shield, I would hear more noise.

I did get the insulation and the heat shield, I haven't noticed any extra noises. And it has been 4200 miles since my install.

The heat shield and the extra insulation have prevented any increase in cabin noise with my mgw. I tried the stock shifter for 300 miles. It was sloppy, and hitting third was soo much harder. There is no comparison, I couldn't imagine going back to the stock shifter.

Good info. I have been wondering what the point of the heat shield was & debating whether or not to order it when I pull the trigger on the MGW. This tells me I want to spend the extra $25.

I have seen some comments around of using a piece of the dynamat between the bushing & chassis to help damp the NVH. Has anyone done that? How effective?

I cut the dynamat to cover all of the exposed surfaces, and the little that was extra I put under the bottom surface. My ocd was placated, but it did make getting the dust boot on a pain

I also have the MGW and couldn't be more happy with it. I also installed the heat shielding and the dynamat and there is no noise at all. It didn't have any noise with the stock shifter either. Uusally with a manual, you are going to get some whining. Not with this tranny. At least in my car. It is a bit more noisy when shifting. But, only when shifting. It is a wonderfully engineered product that I couldn't believe anybody not being happy with. Once in a while a gem appears. This is one of those times.

I am glad to hear that there is a solution for these gear shift imperfections. I was considering getting my SLP exhaust over the next couple of weeks, but I am strongly reconsidering my options.... This will be the first or second install on my Mustang. Question - has anyone witnessed negative warrantee feedback from Ford while conducting routine services?
