Should an '04 Mach 1's brakes hiss when stopping hard?

Long story made short: I got new tires and they told me that my break pads were good but I needed an alignment. I took it to the dealership I got it from and they did the alignment, both front and rear wheels. Short time later while stopping I hear this hissing sound. It only did it while stopping hard but then I found out that it did it when I pushed the pedal down while the car was stopped too. I started thinking that I had some air in the brake line or something so I took it back to the dealership. The first guy I talked to thought there was a problem too but another technician said that they were suppose to do that. To prove to me he demonstrated it with another Mach 1 that had in there being serviced. I'm still not convinced since I've had this car for over 3 years and hadn't noticed it doing that until they serviced it. Plus the other Mach 1 that did it had also been serviced by them. So, does it have a problem or am I just not very observant?

Feel free to flame if all Mach's do this

I've actually heard that this is fairly common with the cobra brakes - i'm not sure why. If i press the piston down by hand w/out brake fluid it kinda does make a slight hiss sound.

I have Mach 1 front brakes on my GT. It hissed with the stock brakes and it hissed now.

It's not really a hiss, but sounds like something is straining. I beleive it's something with the hydroboose which is located right behind the gauge cluster in the bay, so you hear it pretty loudly. I beleive it's the Power Steering fluid under pressure

But every 4.6L Mustang i've driven has done it...GT or Cobra/Mach 1

Maybe it's a PI thing??

100% sure it did it with the stock brakes. I remember trying to figure out WTF it was too and trying it out on a few friend's cars. Theirs did it too.

I've done 3 fluide flushes and installed Mach brakes since...hasn't changed

I thinl all cars make some sort of noise when you mash the brakes hard. I just drove my lexus to the store after reading this post and it makes noise too when you stomp on them hard while stopped

You really only hear it if you are stopped and press the brakes so hard it looks like you are trying to take a crap

If you are just sitting in neutral with your foot on the brakes holding the car from moving, you don't hear a thing.

Just to let you know, the only way to adjust rear suspension is if it has IRS like 99-04 cobra. So I'm hoping they didn't tell you they did a 4-wheel alignment? cuz if that is what they said they lied. They should of charged you for a Front end alignment.

and the hissing you hear is only when you press brakes hard right? Even at dead stop? nothing to worry, it's just the hydroboost doing it's thing.

Good call - I wondered if anyone else had caught that...it's amazing how dumb the dude behind the counter at some auto repair shops can be. It's either stupidity or they are thinking you are and charged you a higher rate based on a 4 wheel alignment. Do yourself a favor and check this out - you may be owed some money back.

Last thing - I've never heard this hissing you are referring to...sorry. I squeeze it and rush up on a curve sometimes, then hammer on the brakes before swinging through, but I wouldn't say it's like I'm "pressing the brakes so hard it looks like you are trying to take a crap" - these aren't RACE brakes...they are very good, but not great.

I never implied i use the brakes that hard during normal driving. I've never done so during panic stops or even autocrossing. I can't even hear the noise while drivng at all.

I meant that comment as a silly joke...not really one to be taken literally as nobody pressed the brakes that hard

The drivers side rear wheel was out of alignment. It was visibly causing the tire to wear on the edge. I have doubt at all about this as the damage was visible. After the alignment and new tires it has stopped doing that. Maybe "alignment" isn't the best word for whatever they did to the rear wheel but they did fix the problem. It only cost an extra $20 too. I previously had a Sears do a front end alignment and rotated the wheels. That didn't fix the probably and just caused damage to a different tire.

I forget who, but someone on this board does alignments and explained what type of alignment a Mustang gets.

It wasn't a 4-wheel alignment, but it involved basing the alignment of the front wheels on the thrust angle of the rear end or something?

Unfortunately I didn't pay attention, but i think the name of the thread was something like "Mustang 4-wheel alignment...BS or not?" or something along those lines.

Yes, a Solid rear axle mustang gets a 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT. The reason is that the rear axle, although fixed in place, may still be cocked to one side or the other at a slight angle. Imagine this

That looks really exaggerated, but you get the idea. It's in there crooked. To align it properly, you want the track on all four wheels to be parallel when going straight. This means that the rear of the car may track a couple mm to one side of the front track, but when you let go of the wheel it will still go straight. The align the front wheels to the rear to make this happen.

If you just get a front wheel alignment, they will make the front to wheels straight, but they will fight the angle of the rear axle, you will have to steer to correct for it a little and it will wear the **** out of your tires because the push or drag.

I checked the paperwork and they did call it a 4 Wheel Alignment.

That is still not a 4 wheel alignment because there is nothing adjustable in the rear to change the alignment. Any proper alignment also measures the rear wheels. The alignment rack I am familiar with uses 4 reflectors that the laser reads. The computer then gives the readings of all four wheels but will only show adjustment procedures to the proper wheels depending on what car is on the rack. Everything is always read. You can't charge for something that isn't possible.

a lot of shops won't check the rears if they aren't doing a "4 wheel alingment"...

it doesn't make any difference how many wheel can be adjusted, what they are talking about with a "4 wheel alignment" is how many wheels are checked to be in alignment

if you give a darn about what you are driving you should always get a 4 wheel alignment
