should there be an separate gasket on intake manifold ('98 GT) (use permeatex?)

A couple of years ago, I replaced the failed intake manifold on my '98 GT. It was using more water than oil . . .

I clearly didn't do something right, as my oil turns to sludge in a couple of miles!

I got the only one I could get my hands on at the time (covid), which came from CJponyparts:




I figured that I'd misapplied the gasket, but on getting it out, it seems that I'd forgotten that it came with these built in.

should there be another gasket?

I picked up a tube of permatex ultra blue gasket maker; should I add to these?

I'm not quite sure where to go from here!

No, I haven't checked YouTube. I normally search with "-site:youtube.com" as there are things I find more painful than YouTube videos, but most involve novocaine . . .

getting it in and out is no longer an issue, and it seems that all of the aftermarket come with nothing more than rubber rings (of which Dorman's are incompatible with the OEM!), but firmly setting those wasn't enough (well, unless there's something separate that I could have damaged on the last round that would let water into the oil, but that seems improbable).

At this point, I think it's really a question of whether or not I should supplement them with the permatex.

this is a band new replacement intake, with 10-12 miles on it.

the original intake was leaking more water than I was using gas . . .

I cleaned the seals and placed it back in. Contrary to most of what I read, I had to leave the alternator off, rather than lightly attached, to get the angle.

At the moment, I have a bolt loosely through the outer thermostat hole, and in the far corner. Is there a trick to feeling when its position is "just right"? I don't feel the change I expect sliding it as it finds the holes. there's a good quarter to half inch of play at the moment. I'm suspecting that I just dropped it in and assumed that it must be right if it fit last time.

unfortunately, I'm doing this *next* to the driveway, with plenty of accumulated mesquite tree detritus, and will have to pick up four bolts in the morning.

are they 9.8 m10 1.25 x40 ?

Unless someone has a better suggestion, I'll try Lowes first, then granger, then, if needed, throw the dice at an auto parts shop. Hmm, I think I can pass an ace between granger and auto shops.
