should you be able to shift gears while car is off?

Just wondering my friend put his shifter on and was able to shift through all gears while the car was off without pressing the clutch.

i cant do that on mine. maybe my clutch is out of adjustment?

I can shift through all my gears while its off...thought that was normal?

the ability to shift through gears when the car is off in normal.
does the tranny shift fine when its on and what not??

You most likely can't shift because there is a slight load on the tranny. Set the parking brake and push the clutch in. Then let the clutch out and you should be able to shift without the engine running.

Yea. As said above. Sometimes I can't put it into the gears without having the clutch in, but other times I can. But then again, my tranny is about to explode, so mine could be screwed up.

Nah that's normal.


Synchros are designed to work when they are spinning, so if you try to shift with the car off, it's hit or miss whether it will slip into gear or not. It all depends on if the synchro is lined up correctly.
