I'm looking for some ideas/pictures of side exhuast systems or anything besides the normal straight back duals. I thought about turn-downs, but I don't know if that would be too noisy; so the only other option I can think of is side exhuast, but I would want it to exit after the rear tire, not before (a.k.a. not like eleanor).

Ive seen a fox body that modified a buick grand national 'catback'. those exhaust kits exit to the side just behind the rear wheels. wasnt really my cup of tea, but looked clean

You could run it behind the rear wheels, but your exhaust would need to have some pretty big bends in it to clear the rear axle. I went with the more traditional approach:

What mufflers are you using with your set-up?

spintech makes the muffler you are looking for. The inlet and outlet are both on the front of the muffler. They also sell the curved exhaust pipes so they exit right in front of your rear wheels.

Dynomax Super Turbo's work as well - part #17676 (2.5") or 17675 (2.25") - $49 ea at Summit.
I believe most of the major manufacturers have a front in/out muffler.

There are really only two options I can think of. One is go the Shelby route and use long glasspacks and the other is use a chambered muffler with frontside in/out. Dynomax has a SuperTurbo muffler with the inlet/outlet on one end. I dont like this idea since the exhaust has to make almost two 180* turns, but alot of dyno tests have shown it doesnt hurt performance. The other sticker with me is you can see alot of the exhaust and it likely will not clear subframe connectors without oval tubing.

EDIT: BobV beat me to the SuperTurbos.

If you look at the twists, turns and angles in a conventional muffler, making ONE 180* bend doesn't seem so bad...

In fact, Steeda got a HP gain with their Borla-based side-exit, compared to 3-chamber flows & tailpipes.

I've never had clearance issues with the side-exits - they don't hang down, and have never bottomed out. As far as SFC's, oval tubing works, as well as "thru-the-floor SFC's like the F-body guys use.

Good description - decent sound at idle, but does not keep you from carrying on normal conversation inside the car. QUIET at cruise speeds, more wind/road noise than exhaust...
But they ROAR when it's time to play.

Mine have been on 2+ years. I'm an "old guy" - 40+, and I didn't want anything loud & annoying. This setup is purrrrfect.

Check out the movie/sound clips at the bottom of this webpage (labeled "burnout videos").

Well I have flowmaster mufflers which are probably too far back for side exit in front of the rear tires, unless there are some serious bends invovled. Anybody done or seen side exhuast behind the rear tire?

Overall, the reason I want side exhaust is to stop the problem of exhuast fumes getting into the interior. It seems that many people with straight back exhuast also have this problem, and blame it on the aerodynamics of the car. I've heard that turn-downs or side exhaust will fix the problem. I'm afraid turn-downs would be too loud , but that seems like my best option right now; mabye I could put the turndowns real close to the trunk floor, farther from the ground. And I don't know how good side exhuast would look behind the rear tire?

turn downs will not get rid of the fumes comming in the car,it will make it worse.I have mine exiting in front of the tire with mandrle bends which is not what you want, but I really havent seen them exit after the tire to the side.

I sure would like to hear some ideas on this subject, because my car gets a LOT of exhaust inside the car. I too thought that if I put some side exit exhaust pipes in front of the rear tires that might fix my problem.

How is the exhaust in the car for those of you who have the side exit exhaust (in front of the rear tires)?

I just ordered the 65 Shelby style side exit aluminized exhaust from Tony D Branda, pipes, mufflers etc. for 149.00 should be here in a couple days, I'm going to add a crossover pipe I'll let you know how it works out /sounds..would have cost more than that to fabricate it yourself..
