sigle stage paint questions?

not sure if this is tech or not but i posted it in another forum and never got any answers. how good is single stage paint does it shine good is it messy and how hard is it to take care of?

lol, how can you say that based on the question?

laquer kinda sucks, you HAVE to wheel it to keep the shine, urethane is way better than base/clear though, but depends on the color , or if it's metallic.

metallic will look more evenly dispersed if base/clear cuz you spray such a light dry coat .

but for black paint....nothing beats urethane

the bonus of single stage is you don't need to worry about wheeling through the topcoat. and if you did you just scuff and spot paint, then re-wheel it.

if you go throught the basecoat on a 2-stage you pretty much need to panel paint.

Its not bad it will shine when sprayed properly and its not hard to spray. It may not be quite as durable as base coat clear coat but it not as costly .And it depends on what brand it is. There are some that are lower grades than others.

I painted my engine bay 5 yrs ago w/ single stage paint and it had a better shine than my factory paint did.

Shine.... I'd say so!!

I have single stage on my 82 Mercedes

Factory lead based single stage...love it

Not sure how to quantify the durability factor. I think for most new cars, which, well never get waxed and are usually neglected, base/clear is better because it shines pretty good under all circumstances...but if you take moderate care of single stage, it can last many more years and is easy to touch up. With single stage it is always oxidizing a little, so regular waxing is very very imoportant.

Once the clear is broken the panel is trash. Single stage can be buffed out right down to the metal.

be happy you don't have an older 380 like me, I had to change pulleys to to convert it to the double row style like you have!

interesting, I had my 90 painted with single stage and about 2 years later the paint seems dull I used Dupont I would like to paint my notch with single stage because it will keep the cost down of my project and clear is some nasty stuff to spray in a garage enviorment anyone else have any other single stage storys that will help me decide?

i just painted mine with acrylic enamel black paint (single stage) it holds the shine pretty good but i find it scratches pretty easy, and little touch on the paint and it leaves scratches. i never tried the urathane paint, but it might be worth looking into.

a professional job requires base coat clear coat - it will last long dependin on the quality of the clear coat used, and is the overall "technology" of today's paint. However, single stage is also a much easier and still effective way - it will definately shine - single stage has more orange peel when it is sprayed, and requires a little more attention to sanding and buffing when dry... good luck

I went with single stage on my 82 last month. It is just as smooth and shiny as any new or clear coated car. I specifically did so that if I change hoods or bumper covers, etc, it will be cheaper and easier to match.

I think a decent single stage looks as good as a clear coat job. I know clear coats have improved since they first came out, and a high end job is as good as it gets, but I have seen many more clearcoats, factory and other fail miserably in 3-5 years.

keep in mind clearcoat was developed for the mass market

and not for hobbyists. Not making an argument for/against it, but it was developed to keep the vast majority of cars on the road looking pretty good for the vast majority of their life.

A good Professional paint job requires base coat clear... and I agree, but us hobbyists can get away with a single stage that looks almost a nice agree?

the topic at hand with 2 stage and single stage is not the issue. any paint when applied correctly and sanded correctly will look great. it is all in the color/finish sanding. with 2 stage the clear usually lays a little rougher but the shine comes with the proper sanding/polishing. the topis of single vs 2 stage is a personal opinion. it it what your eye judges. it is all in the finishing. i still go with the 2 stage urethane.

Basecoat/clearcoat is better IMO. It looks nicer longer and if you want to have it buffed at somepoint to revive it you can. It's more tolerant of environmental attacks (acid rain, bird crap, etc...). It also has more visual depth in the color.
