Of all the stangs made before and including 1972, which one was the fastest? I'm an 05 owner, but my dream is to have a classic in the garage next to it. My dad, who owned a 1971 mach 1 back in the day (wish he had kept it!), claims the Boss 302 takes the cake. Is he right or wrong?

I believe I read the Boss 351 was the fastest early model production Mustang not including the Shelby models then the 68.5 CJ.

The Boss 351 was faster than the 69 Mach 428 SCJs?

(BTW, hello again everybody, this is the first thing I've posted here in about a year... sold the 69 in september...)

nope the 70 boss 429 takes it.. speed channel did a broad cast and took the best of every manufacturer and ran it against eachother.. the boss 429 made the judge look like a geo tracker

The Boss 429 didn't take it back in the day according to the magazine tests. That is all we really have to go on.

I think the Boss 429 on that show must have been tweaked and tuned because it's hard to find any reference at all in 1969 or 1970 that says they were the fastest production cars.

It really doesn't matter, as there were so many variables during track days back then, that it is really hard to get a fair comparison. And if we tried it today, it would be impossible to find all those models in truly factory trim.

1st - Boss 351
2nd Boss 302
3rd Boss 429

according to the aforementioned magazine tests

Thanks everyone. I did some research online and the last post above seems to have it right. the boss 351 is on top and is now officially my target acquisition....well, at least it will be in about 4 or 5 years. for now i'll enjoy driving my 05GT and seeing all of your classic stangs on the road.
