I have an 02 gt and last winter i had been driving the car all day with no problem let it sit for about an hour and then went to move it got in it to start it and it cranked over a few times then backfired and wouldnt start it just sputterd and backfired and die. after some checking i found that the drver side timing chain was streched out ,and the timing was off .The car only has 56k miles on it and the 14k i put on it since i got it havent been very hard on it a few races with friends . The timing i replaced both chains guides and tensioners and tried starting it again and it still would not run acted like it was out of time again. Looked a little deeper and found that the section were the cam gear is located had sliped the same problem the SHO has so im wondering if I should weld them up to fix that problem when i get the new cams and has anyone else heard or had this problem to and what might have caused it ?

if you tried to start the car with the timing off you may have bent valves in the head.

the only reason the cam gear should slip is if the bolt came loose which i have never heard of

which side is having the problem? did you touch the other side chain?

pull the plugs do a compression test on the motor or/ and roll the motor over till each cylinder is at TDC then put air on it / this will check to see if you bent a valve > as for the cams just put new after market cams in it and forget it > newer P.I. cams 03/04 will fix your problem too if yoou want to do it on the cheap.

yes i did try to start the engine with the timing off befor i found the stretched chain I replaced both chains and tensioners and guides with new and it still would not run right so i took the cams out and checked to see where the lobes were and found that the intake lobe on the #1 cyl had just closed at the point when the cylinder should be at tdc on the compresion stroke but I can not tell that untill the new cams i ordered have come in so i can compare them
