Alright guys I have 2 questions

1. Can I run a catted h-pipe without the air pump and smog equiptment. Using the o2s and no flag the check engine light. I am more familiar with the newer obd2 systems but am unsure about these cars. The new cars run cats without an air pump but have o2s before and after the cats.

2. What equiptment will I need if I were to install the smog equiptment back in my car. Air pump, etc. I want to make the car completely emmissions legal, I have seen many cars pass emmsions and still have tons of power.

As the car sits there are no cats, or air pump on the car. It runs great I would like to just throw on the high flow cats and call it a day but am unsure if that will casue a check engine light

You can run the cats without air pump. You will not get CEL from this as the O2 sensors are upstream of where the air is injected into the converters.

I don't think you need to run a smog pump with high flow cats, but I could be wrong.

I know with stock cats, you need a smog pump or else the life of the cats goes down a lot.

The amount the cats flow has nothing to do with whether or not they should be used with air injection (smog pump)

I want to know if anyone on here is actually running the catted pipe without the pump, yes you can use it without the pump but will the life of the cats lessen being there is no air running into the cats. As far as I remember the air pump help make the cats run more efficiently and run hotter.

Run cats with no air pump over a long period of time and you will clog the cats and kill their ability to do their job. The cat converters with the air pipe on them were designed to use the extra air to promote the catalytic reaction that converts the HC & CO into H2O and CO2.

Some of the newer car have cat converters that were designed to work without the supplimental air pump. None of those type converters are available for 5.0 Mustangs with a CARB or EPA certification.

I am and have run my aftermarket cats without the supplementary air injection (smog pump) for years. Still working fine.
