smog pump help

I have been searching this site for smog pump info, I have found some but have a few questions.
Most people need to keep the smog pump for cost reasons or emisions. Mine is emisions, I live in Texas and have inspections every year. I am new to Texas and this kinda sucks.
My pump is starting to make noise, a new one is about $100 from autozone, OOOWWW. I can afford it but woudl rather not waste money on nonperformance stuff.
Have you been tearing yours apart to eliminate noise or just performance. If I can take mine apart and eliminate the noise I would love to spnmd the cash on go fast stuff.
If I run a short belt what size is it or do I just string it(measure it). Will my car/computer even know if I run a short belt??

I think this is the diagram for the short belt with only bypassing the smog pump (someone correct me if I'm wrong) ..... 89" or 90" belt.

Also keep in mind that the cats rely on the smog pump. If you have cats and do this, they could clog .... and that would not be good. Apparently, some aftermarket cats will not clog without smog, though.

you can attempt to tear it apart and lube the roller bearings HISSIN50 can help you with the info to do that, i believe you can relube it as long as it has not locked up.and you can run a shorter belt just run a string and measure without affecting the computer i deleted mine,no smog tests here in alabama, and sold my smog pump on e-bay for $30...and as the post above mine says its not good to delete or bypass smog pump without removing cats so it looks like you will have to relube it and see if that fixes it or get a new or used one....

I'd add that the AIR pump is a close relative to a vacuum pump used for instruments on small air craft. It does not like to be unhooked (short belt) and then reconnected (they often seize shortly thereafter). And with needing cats, you really dont want to remove that air injection (some aftermarket cats free up enough O2 during the reduction stage that they dont necessarily need the pump. The stock cats really do need it just like everyone said).

If you do want to take the pump apart, as Bill said, I can try to help. I've had them apart several times and during the last opening (Justin was kind enough to give me his old pump. ), I took a couple pics of what they look like inside.

Dont even bother if you dont have PB Blaster, some high temp grease and neverseize on hand (wait till you have those before opening it up).

In my experience, if a pump is making noise and you open it up, it will be far enough gone that you will likely need to open it up every 3-5K miles to reclean it. The roller bearings and bushings on the vanes are problematic and need 'help'. Once they start to make noise, they're getting worn.

Good morning all,

I have BBK cat's, the originals were taken off years ago when I lived in Florida. Anyways I think the pump will just be replaced, $100 for a new one versus maintenance every so many 1000 miles sounds like a good investment. The first one lasted 150,000 miles so if I can get to 300,000 on the next I will be happy.

I put a fox air pump on mine. THe hard tube the hose goes to on the back of the pump is just moved over to the side on the fox pumps. My factory hose went on and clears everything. IIRC though there are some possible issues with the ABS or so as it was moved around on some cars or something. If there is nothing close-ish to the air pump just get a fox pump. They are like 35$ new.

I took mine off and used a shorter belt. I believe it is an 89.5" belt. I still have the smog pump if you were interested. I'd give it to you and since you live in Texas I'd UPS it to you if you were willing to pay shipping fees. I don't believe that it was making any noise when I took it off. It still has the pulley on it and bolts for it.

Just a suggestion.

Please hook a brother up.
Last time I hunted around for a new fox pump (Some of the reman'd stuff looks and sounds horrid right out of the box), they were $60, and that was some time ago. I really need to do something with the one I have on there.

I could have swore the autozone or advance price was 35-40$. They may be the re-mand' ones your talking about though.

I got mine from a local board member.

Thanks for the info. That's what I was afraid of. I took a couple out of the box and was not pleased. There's even a sticker that says that the pump might make noise for 5000 miles. Hmmmm.

I still might get one but I'm hoping to get something to install and finally forget-about (my current pump is shreiking at start-up again).

Thanks for the offer but I found the one for the 93's at autozone for $38 with a $10 core, hopefully it fits with little fab required, I do have the ABS box up there but did not get a chance to get under the car. You know how it is, two boys 3 and 7 a long weekend, need I say more.
Going to call tomorrow to see if they have one, yeah right I am sure I will have to go a few days with squeek until they get it in.

John, if your ABS brake line routing is like mine, one line hangs out by itself a bit, and that one might need a little massaging around the output port.

I run a 90.5'' belt with no smog if that helps. I tried a 90 but was to tight, grab a couple and then take the other ones back.

or +1 on the fox pump for the cost
