I live in Chicago and I have to get emissions tests once evert couple years, well I want to removed my smog equipment to clean up the engine bay and lose some weight. I have asked on other boards and have been told that I will pass emissions without the smog pump but I need to have a catted h-pipe. I still have my stock h-pipe in case of emissions tests so that's no problem. But doesn't the smog pump blow air or something into the cats so that they work? Will the cats be affected without the smog pump?

Also is there a writeup anywhere about removing the smog equipment. I'm not sure what has to be removed.

I thought you needed the smog pump to pass the visual part of the inspection But all you have to do is remove the actual pump from the bracket, remove that line going down to the mid pipe, block off the mid pipe and theres another line coming from the back of your heads that you're going to have to have blocked off too. It should come out and be near the EGR tube on your header. Just remove anything connected to the smog pump and plug the vac. lines that you remove.

The chicago test stations don't do a visual inspection. They just hook up some sensors to the tailpipes and in the gas tank and then they run it on a dyno style machine for about 5 minutes.

The smog pump blows air (oxygen) to the cats so they heat up, if they're not hot supposedly they won't work. Thats why you can sometimes smell gas when you first start up the car.

Did you guys have any problem with detonation when you took the EGR stuff off? A mechanic I know told me the computer is programmed for EGR stuff since it cools the combustion chamber down.

1105 what valve covers are those?
