O.K. as if I already dont have enough threads posted heres one more. I am not sure if this is where my smog tubes were at one time or not. But I have talked to a couple people on this valvetrain noise and they asked if I had a smog pump no I do not. They asked if where the tube was if its still open or blocked off I said I dont know. So I go and look and there is a bolt sticking out of each head on the back side of them towards the firewall. The one on the passenger side was snugged I put another 1/2 turn on it and it feels like it could go some more but I dont want to strip it. The one on the drvs side was lose. I was able to tighten it up some with my hand. The bolts took a 5/8 nwrench to tighten. Are these where the smog tubes went and if so how tight do they need to be. Should I take them out and put thrtead sealent on them or anything. Will they give you valvetrain noise if they are not supertight?

i dont think those are the right bolts. i just did this to mine yesterday. the bolt was 5/8, not sure what the head size was, i ended up using a crescent wrench because i couldnt get a ratchet in there, but it was big. close to 7/8 maybe 1"?

ibelieve this Is where the smog tubes went, but there is a smaller bolt used to hold the tubing on, and a large (5/8") threaded hole very close to these bolts that must be plugged.

O.K. well I can feel 3 things on the back of the heads one of them is a recessed cap (freeze plug) The other one is the bolt that doesn't look like your everyday bolt and a empty hole thhat a 7/16 bolt would go into for like a lifting point thats it.

did you ever have the tubes on there? there is a much smaller bolt, about 2 1/2" long on each head, that screws into a 'block' on the end of the tubing. this compresses it onto the head (with a gasket) over the larger hole. The hole you need to plug is the large one. it is threaded, but never had a bolt from factory, Only the 'block' with a hole in it leading into the tubing. this is how the gases enter the smog tubes. The large hole needs to be plugged. I sused a 5/8-11 x 1" bolt, but i'd get a second opinion on this size as i had some 'issues'. I'm pretty sure that the bolt that attaches the tubes doesn't need a plug. I didn't plug it and i see no leaks or problems so far.

Pretty sure that 'lifting point' is actually the hole u need to plug.

O.K. when I bought this car back in November these bolts were already in both heads. If you are standing on either side of the vehicle looking in the bolt is located on the back closest corner of the head to you. I just got my heads and motor back from the machine shop I suspect thats how the 2 bolts on there got lose. I dont know. I just know that when I put my motor back in I used the one empty 7/16 hole on the head to lift it and it was a 1 inch bolt and it wouldn't even thread all the way into the head.

The holes face the firewall right? Are they stock heads? I think some aftermarket heads don't even have this hole. The bolt that holds the tubing on shouldn't go all the way through, but the 5/8 hole should.
