Spoke to the guy we got the heads from. Says they were pulled off a perfectly running car. Says the heads are good to go right on block.

I’m inclined to move the rockers and pushrods. I did make the mistake of pulling the heads and losing the positioning of the pushrods. When I watched the Thinderhead video rebuilds he didn’t keep the pushrods in place.

Should use existing pushrods or buy new ones?

Pic of the valve head area?I
I mixed up the push rods a couple times, just made sure the ends were in good shape, smooth. No issues and I was not nice to those engines.
Maybe I'm lucky

I haven’t once kept the pushrods laid out how they come out of the motor. Use the air compressor to blow air through the oil passage to make sure it’s clear, spray them down with brake cleaner, wipe them off, inspect the ends for wear as well as the bodies for guide wear, and install them at random.

Did you flip the heads over and pour gas in the combustion chamber and see if gas runs down the valve stem?

So am I missing something? I don’t see any difference on the ends of these. Here is a zoomed pic of both ends of a single pushrod. Should I be seeing something here?

So there is no difference in the push rod ends in a small block ford I.e. they can be installed either direction.

Put the spark plugs from your old heads in these so the gas doesn’t go out the hole for the plugs.

What temperature does gas freeze at?!??

It’s 12f outside today. After some chores and lazy Saturday time I’ll get to the leak test. Just want to make sure when I leave the heads and gas outside at this temp I’ll be good. I realize the gas won’t freeze, I’m just whining about it being cold af today.

I’m a sucker for new tools. Picked this up at AZ a week or so ago cause I got annoyed at the angles of the heads and plugs in the 302. This will also help with the boat engine as not as much side room to get to them. Gonna use it to put in the old plugs for this hydro test.

Gas will not gel like diesel so no issues with cold weather.

LOL!!

Anyone have any idea why the Motorcraft ASF 42C plugs which fit in the stock heads don't fit into the GT40 heads? It seems that the shaft is too wide and the plug wont start threading. Am I missing something? What am I doing wrong?

Because they're different plugs. Go get some for a 93 Cobra.

I believe the recommended plug by Ford for a GT40 Y or X head on a stock motor is a AGSF-32C.

Ok, I think I got it level

PS - took like 3 minutes for my wife to say “I smell gas”. I figured I could have kept that garage door shut for at least 25min

After 1 hour. This means all cylinders are leaking, yes? Also means complete valve job required?
