Once I got my speed system down I just needed to go through the sand paper and time.

I got all these tools for a valve job, so I’ll be damned if I don’t put the time in. If after cleaning all these valves and seats up they look like they need to be replaced then so be it. But I will do the work anyway.

Here is the first valve. Before, after, and a side by side with another.

This part went a lot faster. I’m a huge fan of this setup. Valves look gorgeous. Will need to make a determination on these keeper notches.

That is called " lapping" the valves... If they need a valve grind that will NOT work....

I’m telling you that once the valves start to mushroom they continue to do it. Those valves are junk. Buy 16 new valves and and move on. The gear you bought will be needed to lap new valves so not a waste. Good article here on refreshing some GT40 heads:

One valve supplier we interviewed for this article said engine builders will often reuse old valves without paying much attention to the condition of the keeper grooves in the stem. If the grooves are worn or damaged, it may result in a valve failure if the valve is reused. His advice? “If in doubt, toss it out.”

Spoke to AlexParts today. They were SUPER helpful and I would recommend them as a trusted resource. We discussed options for intake and exhaust valves. The challenges in getting exhaust valves which match GT40 setup.

The best part of the conversation was that while I had my wallet opened, he explained that the mushrooming on the keeper groove is normal and expected. He had no concerns with using the stock valves, especially considering there was virtually no pitting on the valve lapping area.

Question on the shims

The trick flow spring kit provided 16 silver and 16 black shims. It looks like the black are half the size of the silver.

Now, following the directions and using the provided 1.800” height guage, the exhaust valves use a single silver shim. Exactly how it was on removal of the old gear.

For the intake valves, it takes either 2 silver or 1 silver and 2 black shims. I planned on using all silver shims, but if I do that it’s 12 silver shims per head. Since there is only 16 total, that wouldn’t work.

The directions simply say “use the appropriate shim to adjust the installed height, if needed”

Is there any issue with using 1 silver and 2 black shims per intake valve?
