All I can say is: I wouldn't do it on my car. Acetone can melt plastic parts like your fuel tank strainer giving you delivery problems and clogging your electric fuel pump and lines, leaving you stranded and it can melt plastic or rubber o rings elsewhere in your fuel system which by the way is under pressurization...can anyone say fire hazard....I think the miniscule increase in power and mileage aren't worth the risks...I played around with the stuff when I was a kid with a go cart and it made it run faster.... :shrug:
 
very interesting.....the melting plastics thing is kinda scary....but only 3oz to 10 gallons..that aint much. I dont see how it would melt anything (maybe). After all there are like 128oz in one gallon...i think. So you'd be adding 3 oz to 1280 oz.

Good call, I don't know how many plastic pieces come into contact with fuel, but I don't want to find out the hard way. Newer and newer cars have so many electronics regulating fuel and engine performance, I wouldn't want to really mess with it. If it really did with no problems, wouldn't all the auto additive companies jump on the bandwagon?

I also wouldn't try it with consumer grade acetone, without knowing what manufacturing tolerances, purity, etc. before I dumped it into my tank. I would probably try it on my pocketbike first though, the engine's a lot cheaper to replace if something goes wrong :D
 
i tried it in my honda and it worked. but the biggest increase in gas mileage for me was driving 5 mph under the speed limit everywhere and keeping it under 2000rpm everytime i take of. my car is rated at 28mpg and by doing this i got 31mpg on my last tank.
 
i put it in....drove back up here to school....usually see round 150 to a half-tank (which is what it takes to get up here), but now it looked more like 175......i'll keep you posted...so far i think it is good, I just need to keep trying it so its not like something in my head or whatever lol
 
I use it in my Intrepid, I've noticed an Increase in mpg.

Gas melts plastic too guys. Engineers realize this and they use treated plastics and rubbers anywhere that comes in contact with gas. Adding a dixie cup of acetone to your gas tank isn't going to change the corrosive ability of the mixture enough for you to see a difference.

Bottom line is that you're not adding enough acetone to really hurt anything.
 
Aaron - I used 6 MEASURED ounces to 20 MEASURED gallons of gas JUST as the web information suggested (3oz : 10gal) and I was sure to drive the vehicle on the SAME roads in the SAME manner as I usually do using the SAME gas station I always use. I do not dog my Ranger truck - it is a 2001 4.0L SOHC FI, Automatic Overdrive, 4x4 with 4.11 gears, Stock tires/wheels, K&N filter with 45k miles on it - BONE STOCK. I run 10w30 FULL synthetic motor oil and I have 40lbs tire pressure (checked regularly with never any variences) I have ALWAYS averaged 20mpg in standard use - I check it EVERY fill up with my cell phone calculator. I have gotten as little as 18.5mpg and as much as 25.5mpg in the past several years with it. I have found that I can increase my mileage by driving at a steady speed lower than the posted limit because the aerodynamics are brick-like. I even found that a recent mountain weekend getaway last month I got 23.7mpg up and down mountain roads in West Virginia as I was taking it easy on it - all this WITHOUT acetone. I was very disappointed to say the least with my acetone experience and I can say with experience that acetone DOES EAT PLASTIC!!!! I put it in a plastic measuing cup and as SOON as it touched it - POOF!!! it started to melt - needless to say you will have to use GLASS measuring cup with accurate markings to get any accuracy with this. Good luck to anyone trying this.....I hope it works better for you than me and does not mess up anything.

Ya...on that tank that I posted about ^^^^above I got an extra 50 or so miles...I'm a beleiver. The 300 miles a week I drive is almost religious, in that i take the same road I-71 and the traffic is always about the same. What I am saying is there is no way I simply drove it easier. I am going to go fill up again (I used like 1.5-2 oz. to my whole tank (15.4 gal i beleive))

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead to finish it....

Acetone worked for me...I have gotten
30 to 40 more miles on a tank than I ever have. I was not simply driving it easier either. I also noticed other things such as a seemingly better idle. That is something I cannot "prove" though.

Basically it was good for about 2-3mpg for me.

i just got done reading a little bit about acetone in the gas tank and a lot of people have had great results with it. most people that are in an area that have high levels of ethanol in the gas see very little if no improvement in gas mileage. so check to see if the gas you are using has ethanol in it or not. im gonna try it....i know of one gas station in town that has a label on the pump that says that the pump "may" dispense an E10 product. which has ethanol in it
 
Google up guys - lots to read about; got it's start in diesel -- supposedly it reduces surface tension of the fuel allowing it to atomize more quickly and completely for better fuel distribution and burn. I don't know. But I'm planning on trying a couple of ounces before my next highway trip. I have a BUNCH of runs between Knoxville and Augusta in both cars, and know what kind of mileage they get over that route. Wife's car will knock down 39.5; mine - 26.5-26.8. We'll see if we can squeeze hers up over 40 or mine over 27. I've got some leftover acetone from re-creating my bumpers in fiberglass. (knocked 57 lbs. off the car)

Oh - mix the 2 ounces in with a gallon or two from your lawn mower gas can -- then dump that can in the car. That should keep the pure acetone from coming in contact with any part of the car.
