I think that GM could have done better with the GTO. As much as I am a fan of the LS-1, I think they could have done a better job to make the car look cooler. I have a feeling that they are going to be dissapointed with the GTO's sales in it current form.

The real thing that will hurt the GTO will be the Charger. Likely close to the same weight, close to the same power numbers, and close to the same cost. The only thing that might be of significant difference will be the Charger will stand out and the GTO...well that speaks for itself.

There is one good thing about the new GTO is that we are finally seeing a trend of Rear Wheel Drive Passenger cars again. I just hope the General stops badging FWD 6 cylinder cars with the SS moniker, and starts making real Super Sports. I wouldent mind seeing a revised Chevelle SS come back or maybe use the Holden/GTO platform for a real Impalla SS if they could do it right of course.

I am interested in seeing a new charger out there. It would be cool if DC came out witg a new Cuda or Road Runner.

OK. The current gto and the 05-07 gto will look completely different. And don't forget the above mentioned ls2. There are also plans for a judge version with well over 400 hp. The current gto was slapped together in the absense of the pony cars and because gm wanted to bring out a new line of cars using the holden chassis. They were having problems with the f-body chassis and didn't have time to tool up so they bought the limited amount of chassis from holden. A lesser version of the the same chassis will be produced in the us starting next year and will be the basis for their performance lineup with the chevelle taking the camaros place.

One thing that GM may do also is use the Holden Ute chassis and bring back the El-Camino. Now that is something I wouldn't have mind having, but by then I will be waist deep into my loving my Mustang and won't want one. 'Hey GM, don't you know, too little, too late!'

My guess is that they use a LS-6 Gen III before they throw in the LS-2 if they do that of course. They are unfourtunately a day late and a dollar short alot of the times. I would not be suprised if a new F-body pops out for 07, after they have gone throgh the mustang with a fine tooth comb.

When the GTO came out it was only because Bob lutz wanted to market the Holden Monero in the US, and decided to use the Pontiac GTO as its moniker. They origionaly were only going to allow the LS-1 to have 300Hp it is only because the LS-2 and the C6 that they are allowing the LS-1 to be tuned to 350.

I thought the LS1 already had 350hp in the F-body but it was just underated from the factory (to keep Vette owners happy), at least that's what all my GM friends tell me about their cars.

I think they detuned it a little, but it was still under rated from the factory.

Rumor Mill still puts the '05 GTO with an LS6 not an LS2...it's supposed ot "silence the critics"....seems to me that if you had done it right the first time, you wouldn't have to silence anyone.

I'm a fan of the GTO (and 13.14 stock is impressive if it's true)...ut I'd really like to see a touch more identity put into this car....even though the originals were designed not to have much identity....

Thats what they like to say but before 02 the LS-1 was rated at 340 in the Vettes. The way I understnad it is the throttle body is narower on the SS and they added a more restrictive exhaust than the vettes. I have heard that if F-body owners put the C5's intake and Throttle Body thanand tweek the chip than the power is brought up to 350. I think it has to due more with insurance than keeping vette owners happy beacaues the Caddilac CTS-V has the same exact LS-6 that is in mine. They rate the caddy at 400 vs 405 but whats 5hp

97-00 Vette = 345HP/350tq
01+ Vette = 350HP/375tq

The F-bodys were underrated to 305/320HP and 310/325HP in 01-02.

The General rule of thumb is the SS is about 10HP less than the Vette and Z28 about 15-20HP less. The F-bodys were restricted by the air filter lid and cat back. AF_Z06 the reason for the Camaro being underrated and restricted is so it didn't step on the Vettes toes, NOT insurance. The CTSv has a quieter exhaust than the Z06 that is holding it back. The C6 is underrated to 400HP to make '04 Z06 owners happier.

A friend of mine that is a GM line engineer that I met at at AF pilot training(He flys for the reserves on the weekends) told me that the architecture for the LS-2 is the same as the LS-1 except that they uped the displacement to the flat 6L. They did minor adjustments to the tuning. But camms and head are Basicly the same. In 06 the rumor mill has it that they are going to increase the displacement of the current LS-6 to a 427 motor similar to the block in the C5-R racers. They will have the upgraded heads and sodium filled valves of the current LS-6. Next year the LS-2 is rumored to get upgraded cams and will be rated at 425 and the gen Z-06 will be uped to 500 in the first year.
