So, I compounded.... And...

Well, on a factory 9 year old black paint job, first I "claybared", then compounded, polished, then waxed my front driver's quarter panel... I had a lot of acid rain marks.. .it seemed that the compound took about 1/4 of them out... should I compound again??? I am afraid to remove too much of an already old clearcoat... any suggestions? Oh, I did all this by hand... no machine.. Will a machine make a big difference?

Machine will make it look 10x better and 10x easier to remove defect. My paint is 11 yrs old (95 gt) and I've just started using a porter able buffer and the results are well worth it.

I'd recommend a Porter Cable especially if it's your first time using a buffer. The results with a buffer compared to doing it by hand is like night and day.

Well I did use a $30 orbital buffer I bought at pep boys, but once the compound started to dry, the bonnett on the buffer started to move all around and actually came off the buffer. do I need to stop compounding once it starts to dry? Or, do I need to buy a more powerful buffer with the hook and loop attachment to prevent slippage of bonnet? I just want to do everything possible not to have to get the whole car repainted...

You need a good high speed poisher. Get the hook and loop with a 3m pad and use 3m perfect it 2 rubbing compound then use 3m machine glaze then finish with a wax of your choice, I use race glaze. You need a polisher that has a higher speed to really get a smooth fine finish.

to make the compound last a little longer on the panels, spray a "little" water onto it to keep it while you buff, i dont think a Porter Cable will give the results you need,it a orbital, like it was said get a polisher but be carful of burning through the paint

The porter cable seems to be liked by everyone, but i agree, even better results can be had with a true polisher. Just takes skill not to burn right through the paint
