So I always roam the Santa Monica Mountains especially on the weekends. Last weekend I saw about 3 classic stangs rolling by the rock store as I passed in my S2000..............This leads me to ask, do any of you guys actually congregate or organize group drives on a weekly or monthly basis? If so where do you guys go, how many usually come? And who should I get in contact with to catch some of these weekend jaunts?

Just as a side note on this topic, I know the sheriff and police departments are coming down hard on cayon speeders. I read their latest press release, so I am in no way condoning that we fly through the canyons. I simply would like to see 5-15 beefy, mean, racey classic mustangs :flag: rolling through the canyons.....needless to say, I would be shutter happy......

SSSSsssoooooooooo am I correct in assumin none of you guys like to cruise canyons ? Hell I told you before, I understand the threat with cops so we can actually.....imagine this..........go speed limit in critical places! :jaw: I just wanted to see if anyone actually enjoyed driving through the cooled canyons and then PCH early in the morning on weekends...come onnnnnnnnnnnnnn.....I know how to get you guys to talk! lol......If you have American muscle pride :flag: you will give me your two cents. SO, WHO'S ready to :flame: me? lol Come on guys anyway want to join a medium size run?

Well, you're a little bit too far north for me :p

About 845-900AM Sunday, I'll be cruising up S-78 from the Brawley (Imperial County) area and up the canyon from Ocotillo, through part of the Anza-Borrego Desert; taking a right just SE of Julian onto S-2, another right on S-79 through Warner Springs, and a final right (on the pavement) down Chihuahua Valley Road. After 9 miles of paved Chihuahua Valley Road, there's a left (actually it's straight ahead while CVR makes an abrupt right turn) onto 11 miles of rough dirt road to Lost Valley Scout Reservation.

But, instead of good old "honest 'Merican Muscle"; I'll be driving 21st century "Muscle" - my '02 F150 4x4 with the "killer" 5.4 SOHC. It's a great truck, but it would be a stupendous truck with a Windsor. Gotta figure out how to make that work with E4OD/4RW70 tranny

See my name, mate! LOL

I actually live 10mn from the rock store.
I took the photo in my signature in the Santa Monica mountains too.
I roam these canyons quite a bit (mostly Cold Canyon and Mulholland Hwy) when my car is in shape (right now I am getting ready to tear it up for front end and R&P work. But I am game, once we're back on the road...

Hey rbohm! I remember once (must have benn 2001) when the Tucson Jaycees hosted a monthly AZ Jaycees' Board of Directors Meeting at one of the picnic areas halfway up Mount Lemmon Highway. I was a State VP at the time, so we loaded up the kids and they hung out at GranMaw Claire's while Sue I went to the meeting. About halfway through, we stopped the meeting to watch a parade of 30+ Plymouth Prowlers going up the hill; with 4-5 PCSO escorts. Exhaust echoes all up and down the canyon. :nice:

dude sounds like a blast!! my next two weekends are booked but on aug 4 I would love to cruise the canyons. Just picked up a 65 vert 408 equiped with a tremec 5 speed and I need a severe dose of summer cuisin..... shoot me an email if you are interested [email protected] . chris

Me and my buddies occasionally cruise through there, unfortunately my 67 coupe isnt canyon ready just yet. We usually go in out New Edge Mustangs, My 01GT, their 01 & 03 Cobras. We actually did a cruise through their with about 100 cars, you can check the video out here http://www.thestableproductions.com/media/hootershot6.wmv and see our other meets at www.thestableproductions.com
We usually get a few classics from time to time and I would love to see more come out. I'll post here the next time we have one.

Funny thing is, I'm 99% sure I watched and briefly ran with you and a parade of ferrari's at the top of stunt road several months back (in my Black S2000). Could that have been you?

And as for the stable productions............I lived in Santa Barbara when they began and am actually in 2 of their videos BUT I was with that group at 4 of their other videos. I was friends with a bunch of other mustang guys up their including my two roomates and MYSTIFY....until he did this to his car several years back:

I guess that's what happens with 615rwhp in the rain...ooops

Anyway guys, I'm in the middle of rebuilding my short block right so it'll be about a month or several weeks before the fastback is back on its feet......but until then.....light the fires and kick the tires.

Randy (Mystify) got his cobra back up and running a while back. He was at our last cruise in September of last year. When you are back up and running, let us know. I would consider a canyon cruise at decent speeds (damn drum brakes) as long as the road is dry.

I wouldn't suggest using Stunt or any of the other roads in the area since Operation Safe Canyon is in effect

I live off Cold Canyon, near Stunt Road. There is occasional police presence, yes. Weekends are of course the worst time to hot dog. I do my play on weekdays. Weekends are for cruising.

There are a lot of hikers and horse riders using trails that end up on these roads. They are the ones who alerted the authorities in the first place. I understand their point of view; no need to point fingers. I'm just happy to be able to get away with the occasional canyon fun so far.

Don't worry guys......I am all to aware of the police crack down. As such, my original intentions were (and still are) to go for a CRUISE not a fast canyon run. And as far as getting any crap from the sherriff's up there.......they're people just like you and I, so as long as you show them respect and aren't exceeding any laws by an excessive amount you should be fine. Besides, many guys on the force appreciate vintage vehicles......i've been pulled over more than 23 times in my fastback......and how many tickets did i get out of it? 1!!!! ONE ticket, all the rest of the times, I ended up talking shop with them. Not to mention two of those (non-ticket) times were with open headers!.....we can go fast here and there....just not stupid.........in essence Let's get a cruise together we can enjoy without the feeling of "Driver's Remorse" =)

Besides, I'm not at all saying stunt is THE road....i'd have to say that it's only 1/10th of my weekend excursions in the canyons. It's like a utility road to get to better places. So don't worry about it. Come on guys...... don't be so paranoid, if you don't act stupid there's nothing to get called out on.

You guys are braver than I.

The popularity of Super Car Sunday at VCR has brought much more spirited traffic (and wrecks) to the region. The fatalities in recent months, the videos posted on YouTube, and the complaining by the residents have given the city what they need for this new operation.

They are looking to "thin the herd". They could care less if you are just driving through or not, they want to send a message to stay away. Front plates, tint, too loud, too low, etc. will all be part of it.

You don't have a press briefing with the Captain of the Sheriff's department, the County Supervisor, and the Captain of the CHP from the Mulholland overlook (and later down below at the skid mark laden Mulholland below if you are only going to bust the guys acting stupid

I don't want to become a statistic for them to prove their point, so I'll stick to canyons outside that area.

Good luck guys!

canyon carving

Well I read the article, Makes me consider not attempting to go fast at all but THIS IS A FREE COUNTRY. If we are all legit there is nothing they can do. The police know who they are after, and its not the guy in his clasic mustang on a canyon cruise. Again aug 4 is excellent for me!!! who else is on for aug 4????? lets do it. chris

Odds are it was me and my Ford club (the All Mustang and Ford Club of So Cal [click on sig pic]) We go to VCR every Sunday (we helped get it as big as it is) and then go for a drive, to Neptunes Net, or somewhere. We'll be around VCR this Sunday. Join us if you want to. This weekend will be the big one. We usually leave VCR about 9:30 to go drive then lunch.
